I (nor did my brother) did enough research when we bought our used Ford Focus cars (2014 for me, 2015 for my brother). We both got rid of them due to the garbage Powershi(f)t transmission. It was impossible to get fixed, months to even have a chance to even try to fix, parts were unobtainium. Finally with 59K on it, tired of its terrible behaviors, I traded it in Sept. 2021 it with huge depreciation and bought a Mazda CX-30 as one of the few 'small' vehicles with a real transmission - not a POSCVT. Sad as the rest of the car was fine.

CVT transmissions, the death knell of the vehicle at 60k to 90k miles. The recommendation on CVT is to change the fluid every 30K, but inherently a bad unit. Jatco was once an independent sewage plant in the gear ration arena. Then Nissan, to increase profit by purchasing the company, made no improvements. Toyota, however does use their own CVT in Corolla with reliability still outstanding.

Multi-speed transmissions in these new cars used to comply with ever increasingly strict CAFE standards have never been a good idea and almost no modern vehicle has gotten them right. 6pd. autos were likely the limit and those with 7, 8, 9, 10 gears is too much. They have to be programmed well and almost no manufacturer gets it right. When you step on the gas it’s always a battle between probability, programmed fuel economy and what the driver intends to do. Too many moving parts. They’re jerky, only in the right gear maybe 95 percent of the time and gear hunt at low speeds. You’re spot on with Kia Sportage, terrible 6 speed transmission and vehicle. Only the Aisin 6spd. the ZF 8 speed used in the Ram trucks and believe it or not….Ford’s 8 and 10 speed are the best ones I’ve seen.

One thing that really aucked and ruined a lot of dodge vehicles was their transmissions. However I must admit, the 8 speed was amazing. Always shifted smooth and accordingly, never had a slip or any hiccup. I was truly amazed by it. The worst transmission by far for me is a 10 speed ford transmission. It is horrendous!! It jerks, sometimes shifts earlt, sometimes late, jerks at low speeds sometimes, sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes i hit the gas, nothing.. then it jumps and shoots me into the seat.. downshiftd violently one time, the other time it doesnt downshift early enough.. the biggest pile of garbage ever made. The 9-speed has had calibration issues in a few different brands vehicles, but that’s not a mechanical issue, and have since all been sorted out. The 9-speed is also very reliable mechanically, and today OEM’s know how to map the software properly so they’re not epileptic any longer. We hardly ever have to tear into ZF units for serious issues, even fewer for rebuilds. 8-speed is light years more reliable than Ford / GM 10-speeds

We had a 2019 Taco. Great truck, awful transmission. It was very prone to downshifting on the highway for what seemed like no reason at cruise, which made for a very annoying highway experience, but would not downshift when you’d expect.
@Marzimus
@Marzimus Жыл бұрын
There's an aftermarket Shift Commander (something like that) which reprograms the shift points and makes the truck what it should have been OEM.

I was wondering on the Kia Sportage was that transmission problem just for that model or the one before it? And I agree on the last generation of ford focus they made in North America the dct was just nothing more then junk luckily you can by a used dct for about $1,500 in the us not sure how much they are used in Canada!

Good Morning Jeremy. Kia and Hyundai do use a lot of common drives throughout many models so many are not great and that Ford is just not good. If a person needs the Focus, the manual is the only way to go

Early Honda CVTs, From 14-15, These have been completely redesigned with launch Gears instead of solely relying on a Steel belt, But if course as an owner of a 2020 Civic Sport we chose the 6 speed manual with a None turbo charged 2liter engine, It's been all around Great performing Car with almost 50,000 trouble free miles, If this changes You'll be the first to Know, Why because it's the Right thing to do.👍🇺🇸😁

Don't understand why R&D doesn't catch these issues before the vehicle goes into production . It was rare to see these issues years ago with bad engines , trannys and other things that should not be happening. I was a mechanic from the 70's into the late 80's and I walked away from it , I could see the start of it in the late 80's and knew fixing cars was no longer an enjoyable trade.

I have a 2014 Nissan Maxima with a cvt. At 110,000 it started slipping. Solution: change the NS-2 transmission, to the now NS-3. Pull the plug, 6 quarts drains out, put plug back in, put in 6 quarts NS-3. Transmission was fine after that till 30k miles later. Slipping again. Repeat previous process, but this time did it twice. Waited 2 weeks between each change. And....there is an external filter behind the driver side front wheel. Changed that. Transmission is running cherry now. Total cost so far $500.00 for the fluid, $50 for the external filter. A lot cheaper than the 8,000 the repair shop wanted, and the shop declared the slipping transmission not repairable. Hmmmmm.......

Seems to me that the more gears in a transmission, the more apt it is to fail or have major problems. Sometimes "hi-tech" is not the way to go.

These car companies need to make a change: If they can not build a car that is as dependable and reliable as a Toyota they need to go out of business! I love the R/4, and the Corolla. Nothing is perfect but I had fewer problems maintaining them than other models. I have always been interested in why General Motors builds so much junk for that reason I have never bought a GM product.!
