In Russian we use the same verb (equivalent of the English verb 'measure' for any temperature: water, body, air, flame, etc.). Therefore, we are dealing with Ruglish (Russian+English = Ruglish), when a person with Russian roots uses idioms or even grammar constructions from Russian with substituting Russian words with English words. And yes, we almost don't have anything equal to articles in Russian language. Sometimes we use Old Russian language remnant, fossil instead of the definite article THE. E.g. Substitutes for A/AN: One man said... Some girl is crying bitterly... Any man wants to be happy... THE substitutes: This child is joyful... Those children are playing in the yard... I haven't bought that bread you asked me to buy... The Old Russian element we use from time to time as equivalent for THE article is Russian particle -TO: Where is my key? Key-TO is on that table near (that) window...

Dear Kevin and Liza, My father wrote a textbook of American English for Foreign Learners back in 1979 ... However, due to the fact that the relations between the USSR and the USA were going through a rough patch at the time, the manuscript was turned down and its publication was strictly forbidden by the Communist educational authorities. My father passed away a long time ago but I still have that manuscript. I could type it up and email it to you in parts if you want absolutely for free. Obviously it's horribly behind the times and needs a lot of updating but I believe it might still be of considerable interest to teachers and students of American English. - SF Moscow, Russia

You can ONLY use the verb "take" and "check" like; - take your blood pressure. Or. Check your blood pressure. # "measure" and "get" have different contexts.

If we're talking about two people, would it be grammatically correct to ask, "Do they both have a fever?"
@fredylopez2477

I think it's not correct, you can say either; - Do they have a fever ?. Or. - Do both have a fever ?.

It's not the idea that ilands have the article "the" .The idea is the plural form of a country.The United States is not an iland but it has "the".
@fredylopez2477
@fredylopez2477 3 ай бұрын
I understand that those are special cases, no matter the plural form of a country, you simply got to use the article "THE" in those cases and memorize them, that's why USA has to be "THE USA" even though it ain't an island. In the long run, "The United States of America" is a proper noun too but we have to add the article "THE", the same thing happens with "The United Kingdom", The Phillipines etc.... they're all proper nouns because those are the names of the countries.

You’re a great English teacher, but the map of China is incorrect. 😢 The Republic of China is actually Taiwan. And the flag is this one 🇹🇼. Taiwan is not a part of China. The People’s Republic of China (PROC) is the China you were referring to. Not being political, just pointing out the difference. Thank you.
