I started investing because I liked the extra money from stock dividends. The key, in my opinion, is to make enough money through both investing and dividends, so you can live off the dividends without selling anything. This way, you might pass on this financial advantage to your kids. I've put more than $600K into dividend stocks over the years, and I'm still buying more, planning to keep going until prices drop more.

Hearing from an experienced investor who has survived the crisis and prospered is always comforting. It could be worrisome when your portfolio goes from green to red, but if you have invested in strong firms, you should just keep growing them and stick to your goal.

My investing strategy as a beginning investor at the moment is to invest small amounts ($200-$500) in such stocks. If a stock disappoints, I'd be having 70-100 other stocks that would compensate for any losses. Of course, that would require me to review my portfolio every, say, 6 months or so, but nothing is perfect in life, I guess.

I am up 20% in ARR. I bought it in the 4.88-4.90 range and it hasnt even yet hit its March 2020 low. These stocks are meant to be traded...buy low, collect some dividends for a few months and then sell for a capital gain. I bought when yield on cost was like 20-25% at the time. ARR beat its earning expectations and i have a 20% cushion in it. Mreits, bdcs/cefs are not long term holds but better traded using technical ananysis. I never thought ARR would be one of my best performing picks up 20% since I bought in October. In the end, I dont think anything except index funds are long term holds. Despite its dividend cut a 0.10/monthly dividend is pretty good for a stock purchased below 5/share. CEFS are rotational holds you probably wouldnt like EDI or EDF but with monthly dividends of .07/ a month and 0.06/month, respectively they have a long history of dividend cuts but purchased from 3.50-3.95/share, both are trading close to $5/share. Its just a matter of when to hit the sell button. Mreits,CLOs, and emerging market fixed income have been doing well lately. Since I reallocated my portfolio in these sub $5/stocks, I was able to go from down 30% in October to down 17% today. I just dont know if its time to sell as I havent even gotten my first dividend from EDF and EDI yet

I invest for the long term. A company that cuts its dividend gets off my research list. The one exception is companies that cut their dividend during economic stress such as the pandemic. They demonstrate a proactive management approach to running their business. When dividends get over 9 or 10% there is usually something wrong. Dig deeper. The last thing is capital appreciation is secondary in my income investment decisions. I am looking for a long term stream of income, and will let the NAV run within limits.The one criteria that I ignored to my demise is diversification. I spread my risk over several income producing strategies, and want any income stream to be diversified. Income investing gives me security in the life I live and allows me to leave something behind to benefit my children.

High interest/dividends are usually a red flag. Why does this company have to pay such high distributions? It isn't out of the goodness of their heart. Doubly frustrating is when the stock price goes down but you are saddled with high dividends that are taxable. You know you are losing money and you get to pay taxes for the privilege.

@MrAlbinopapa2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, ORC has been a disaster. My thought was, it's down so much already, surely it can't get any lower...now I'm down $450 ( 25% ) YTD and have only made back $45 in dividends. Just going to have to take the loss and find something else. ARCC, ACRE are all in the green for me right now, but there hasn't been much positive movement over the past 6 months, hovering around the $20 ( $19 - $22 ) mark. That means the only real benefit here IS the dividends since share price has been pretty much level.
@callmeosho77922 жыл бұрын
ARCC has >8% yield so even if it never moved you are getting 8% on your dollar every year
@MrAlbinopapa2 жыл бұрын
@@callmeosho7792 Yeah, that's kind of what I was getting at with that last sentence. Now that ARCC is down around $17, the dividend yield is close to 10%. I really wish I had money left over to buy. I really suck at this whole stock market thing lol. I've got >$8k tied up in MO thinking it would be a good recessionary hedge ( no matter how broke, people need their nicotine right? ) and wouldn't you know it? I bought in at $50 and now it's down to $41. Why didn't I sell you might ask? Every time I considered it, the price would inch higher, then I'd wake up the next day to another over night selloff. I finally decided to buy a Put at $42.50, and then it decides to hover around the $41-$42 price for the past 2 weeks. So my shares are down about $900, my Call is down around $100 and my Put is down around $40. I'm torn between waiting for a rebound and hope it's high enough for my Call to make up some of the difference ( expires 1/20/2023 ) at which point my Put will expire worthless ( 8/19/2022 ). So I'd be out the cost of the Put and perhaps $300-400 on the shares. That's option A. Option B would be to just take the $1k loss now and just stick to Options contracts. At least you aren't risking as much with Calls/Puts as you would be buying the 100 shares. In order for either of them to work, I need the price to move out of the range $40-$42 before either of my options are profitable. Hell, even buying a Put at a higher price costs just as much as what I would lose if I just sold at the current price. Outside of that, I'm just trying to build up cash using Covered Calls and Cash Secured Puts on cheaper stocks. Getting about $100/week selling as opposed to losing $100/day buying shares right now.

amazing video! any thoughts on AGNC?
@bryceasj1999 Жыл бұрын
When I personally pick REITs, I generally disclude their performance over the past 3 years. COVID restrictions were too strenuous for too many industries. The pandemic knocked them over, now high interest rates are keeping them from getting back up. Shares in mREITs are ridiculously underpriced because of the dividend suspensions. Even in the days leading up to the pandemic we saw dividend cuts, due purely to uncertainty. I'd spend a lot less on unnecessary things if I foresaw a pandemic-induced recession. NYSE:IVR, at the time I write this, has a 28% yield. TSX:BSO.UN has a 33% yield. Price doesn't always reflect intrinsic value, and I think this is the perfect example. As long as companies haven't liquidated their assets, there's no reason they can't recover and go regain their old share price and previous dividend payouts. Don't know about you, but I want a 33% dividend after things go back to normal.

@@davidroush1224 nice 👍 I automatically got shares of Orion Reit last year when Realty Income bought Vereit and they just issued a dividend a few days ago and I think I'll start adding to it now that they've begun a dividend although it's only.40🤔

@@shermanyoung8185 - yes, that was a nice several thousand dollar gift. We are just holding on to it for now and letting it reinvest since it was "free money." I also bought my children O stock years ago when they were in college and let it DRIP since. I started that with the thought it could essentially serve in place of a pension for them decades down the road. My daughter is up to about $250/month in O divies. My son has aggressively added to his account - he still lives at home and has a good job and he is getting over $700/month. My impression is that he would like to retire early (FIRE) so he is investing most of his paychecks for now. Either way he is saving a lot and developing good habits. Also, a nephew and sister in law bought some O in their retirement accounts based on our positive experience with O. Turning into a family favorite stock.

@@davidroush1224 wow 😲 that's awesome, now that I'm retired I'm trying to do something similar with my 7 daughters and one Son who just started on the Police department I'm trying to encourage him to put a portion of his pay every week in Realty Income , they slowly getting the hang of it 😅 but you absolutely right Realty Income is definitely a generational thing,I only wish I could have started earlier with them back in 1994 when they went trading shares,oh well ☺️ but their share might reach $100 in the next year or 2, plus I think they in the process of purchasing a casino in Boston from Wynn Resorts, I wish the best for you and your family 🙏

There is just one Problem with your "Analysis", you show us here - it's only about the past. When i Analyse a Company, i look at the exact fundamentals (in REITS something like the balance between Equity, Liability, Assets is very important imo). The current Shareprice and the decline of the past does not say a single word about the actual intrinsic value. I Really enjoy your Videos - Keep up the good work! =)

I've been watching your videos for awhile now. While many see your investing strategies as non-conventional maybe even a little crazy its like you say all the time. This is the way YOU choose to invest and its not for everyone. Time and time again I've waited for you to mention ORC yet you never do. I went back and forth and eventually jumped in. I knew better too!!! Wondering if I should cut my losses or wait it out. I have a snowball building really fast and if you scroll out it always seems to briefly recover. Even if temporarily I'd be able to get out in profit. Any thoughts or ideas? Please keep bringing us your content, love your style and videos. Always something to take away
