72k miles and 3rd set of pads and rotors. Apparently $350/axle for brake service is just pads and rotors and not slide pins. Found out later those are an extra $140. The 1st brake job lasted 12k miles but was out of warranty. Unfortunately I also needed my brake lines replaced because it was leaking brake fluid.

I went through the same issue with my Prius. They gave me new spark plugs and coils, changed the fuel injectors etc. Still the same problem after spending over $2000. Then they said I had a bad engine which would be $6000 to replace. I was not going that route. So I researched and saw it could be a bad head gasket, which would also be expensive to replace. I discovered by putting a gasket sealer in the coolant will solve the problem. So I am now kicking myself that it would have only cost me only $50 dollars to fix in the 1st place.

When nothing worked they had me get a new engine. then “forgot” I wanted to keep the old engine and let it “go to the scrap guy”…. Last month had a rattling coming from front driver side of engine compartment. Took it to a different Toyota dealership who tried to tell me I needed an entire new transmission “minimum $6-7k”. then tried to have me trade it in and just buy a new car. I was able to “KZbin diagnose” it while it was at the dealership and found it to be the clutch dampener only $1.1k part $2k labor to install. Can’t even trust the actual Toyota dealerships anymore. KZbin mechanics FTW.

This is a known problem.. My question is what's going to stop the new replacement head gasket from failing 75,000 to 100000 miles down the road?
@acblunden20633 жыл бұрын
Maintain the EGR system and clean out the EGR ports in the intake manifold. A faulty EGR system (stuck open) will send too much exhaust gas back into the intake manifold for re-circulation. That will mess up the air/fuel mixture and will blow the head gasket. If you've never done the EGR system and manifold, do it now. Then do it ever 30k miles or so as a part of regular maintenance.

Sounds like you swapped an engine with another bad short block! Toyota dealers are telling customers to change synthetic oil at 10K miles. Changing at 5K would avoid the short block from getting damaged by the piston rings causing gaps for oil to escape.
@rustyicepick846223 күн бұрын
If ignored that leaking head gasket and the shaking in the morning caused by liquid coolant in the cylinder(s) will lead to bent piston rods. Not long after that the rod will fail. It will happen instantly making a loud, mechanical noise and maybe even poking a hole in the engine crankcase and leaking oil dramatically. I know, it happened to me. At first it was just an occasional shaking and rattling sound from the engine. As the car warmed up, the shaking and rattling went away. A shop I took it to did not experience the shaking. Then it became more frequent, lasted longer and got louder. I also noticed my coolant going down. The next shop I went to experienced the shaking and diagnosed the leaking head gasket. $3000 later I learned this was not an uncommon problem with Prius cars. What I didn't know at the time, and what the mechanics should have known, was the potential for bent rods. Too late. On the freeway about 4 days later the rod let go. Now I'm waiting for an estimate on a rebuilt engine to help me decide if I should just sell the car as is to a junk yard. DO NOT IGNORE A PRIUS ENGINE THAT IS SHAKING/RATTLING.
@fayazaziz92510 ай бұрын
When you buy a used Prius/ct200. Always see the car in the morning when cold. Open the coolant reservoir and see if there is pressure built up. If no pressure during cold start. Then safe to say engine should be fine.

Strong diagnostic skill is probably the most important thing a mechanic can have. I own a hybrid shop but I am careful in my diagnostics, and never do guess work and throw parts at a car to see if it fix a problem. A mechanic has to know the nature of s misfire. Things like does it misfire worst at closed loop etc. Is it a random misfire, is the misfire caused by one cylinder. Upon removing a plug does on of the plug look like it’s been cleaned? Obviously caused by coolant making it’s way into the cylinder. Also like you said a misfire after sitting for long periods of time would have had time for coolant to accumulate in the cylinder thus causing misfire but the blue liquid is very useful as well I used them in my shop to check for exhaust in the cooling system. Good job and I praise your honesty which is same policy in my hybrid shop. The difference in me is I’m actually a regualr mechanic like you who just happened to have background in electronic engineering that’s why I fix hybrid and electric car as well, but those guys have no business working on hybrid if they are that poor in diagnostic because hybrid cars are some of the most difficult to diagnose. An example is a no start condition in a hybrid car would have a regular mechanic fooled the car has a stalling problem. They might say it start runs for 15 seconds and stall when in fact the hybrid battery is actually trying to start the car. When an engine is being cranked by a 220 volts hybrid battery pack it sound like it’s idling lol. 😂It keeps cranking it about the same speed as idle for 10-15 seconds and quits if it does not start making it seem like it’s running then stalling.😂

Have you figured out why the gasket fails and how it can be avoided in the future? All of these gasket changes on 1.8 hybrids since MY 2010 resolve the issue for a short time. I have heard all to often this is a common problem with Gen 3 priuses around the 100k mark, Toyota should take some responsibility for this, from what I understand the adhesive they used for the head gasket wears away and that is what ends up causing the problem, which is not a cheap or easy fix.

In each case, there is still some water in the plastic tank. Engine runs smooth, accelerates smooth, purrs like a cat. No white water vapors in the exhaust. Took apart the front, and looked for pink residue around connections and radiator seal lines. No pink residue. Rubber hoses are tightened with original spring clamps, but no pink leaks. Electric water pump is clean. However, there is pink residue at the back of the plastic overflow tank, the firewall and the drive shaft. Sometimes the leak is so big, that it ends up on the front passenger tire and the passenger side doors. How does it go from inside to the OUTSIDE the vehicle is a mystery. Check engine never shows up. The high temperature light comes on and off, sometimes flashing, sometimes solid, then disappears. Driving around town seems no loss so far. Planning to do a pressure test and exhaust fumes test later on today.

Sounds like your engine overheated...since you lost coolant somehow from an external leak...which means your headgasket got compromised ..

@@haywardkong1213 just finished hg job. the car was never abused. never low on water or oil. no reason to leak, except toyota used substandard lot of gaskets. this is why some cars last for ever and others fail. the overheating is weird, because no loss of coolant, full container, and suddenly overheating that lasts few seconds. with a blast of coolant spill. like a small explosion inside the coolant system. seems like there was a microcrack between cyl 4 and coolant and microburst of gasses shocks the system and causes the overflow. and since the most of the coolant flows normal, and is not affected, it quickly brings the car under control. my only question is, why it did not get worse faster and faster and become permanent? at least i have a victor reinz hg and other gaskets and grommets. they began turning hard.

@@haywardkong1213 thanks for your suggestion. you are right this is what toyota determined when they looked inside with boroscope . i just educated myself recently, there are 7 different ways for gasket failure, and 3rd gen prius this is typical. substandard lot of hg, and microcrack, that lets gas out, but very vey little coolant it.

God Bless you. Toyota service center tried to do the same with me. Didn't fall for it. Of course, I'm a man and nearly 40 years of driving. I know a thing or two. Unfortunately, they take advantage of Women and elderly. Not right. Be honest and do work right and not only earn that customers business for life, but also, they bring you new business.The business I'm in (Not auto mechanic), I turn down 1 or 2 customer a day because they don't need my product and services and they think they do. I is so easy to take their money and they will even thank me for it. But, that is not the right thing to do. I'm a small business and my competitions is alot bigger and stronger. Businesses the size of mind went out because of COVID. I was able to weather it just because of my business practice. I don't advertise and I don't knock on doors anymore. My business solely comes from referrals. Do it honest, do it right.

Wow. What a coincidence. I'm living in my Prius here in Dublin, Ireland and just starting experiencing the morning rattle/shaking with coolant loss. No idea who to contact here as all main Toyota shops here have extortionate prices for even small jobs. Anyway, wish me luck.

God bless you. I will put a good word for you out there. I feel so sorry for that woman. She should sue them and expose them. I would spend money on ads to expose them. They're are no different than thugs and criminals.

Spark Plug is like 100$ and take 10 minutes to replace, mine does the same (Lexus ct 200h) they just told me its not the Head gasket but the intake manifold gasket

I just purchased a 2012 ct200h 2 weeks ago with 150k miles I drove it for approximately 1000 miles and I started noticing that exact shaking from the video. They told me it could be bad spark plugs spark plugs and had those changed they also mentioned the same thing that it can be bad coils but they confirmed that it wasn't neither after they replaced the plugs and tested the coils. The mechanic said he's going to try to change out the cylinder number 2 because it's still showing up on his OBD scanner. As of now I have not been losing coolant. Am I being scammed? Is it going to be the head gasket and it's just in the initial stages of breaking down ?? Can someone please help I would truly appreciate it

if someone tells you they "fixed" it but it is not "fixed", you must demand a refund. It's the LAW in the USA. In other words, in America, nobody has right to take money for something that is a lie. To rephrase, the Laws are in place to protect the consumer. Anybody can file a case in court. In Oregon for example, a person can file a claim in Small Claims Court if it is under $750.00 and a person would not even need an attorney: the judge will act as attorney. Do not spread the lies about helplessness of a consumer.

Ok my daughters ct 200h is doing this exact same thing but her shake only lasts like 30 to 40 seconds then it stops and runs smoothly. She hasn’t lost very little coolant and it’s never gotten hot or over heated.So what causes the head gasket to blow on these cars? Has there or is there any recall information?
@gasketmasters2 жыл бұрын
There’s not going to be a recall because it’s not a safety issue.

I have the same issue on my prius 1.8. But today i turn on my car, engine starts shaking and making rattling noise very badly. While this happening suddenly a white smoke came from the hood. Than engine stops. That smoke smells like gas. Kindly tell me the reason and how make it done?
