Almost all modern vehicles including other generation Priuses have aluminum heads and steel head bolts so this doesn't explain why the 2010 to 2015 have such a high failure rate. Perhaps head bolt spacing, head gasket material or I've even read that the electric water pump is to blame since as it ages the pump slows down. It seems to be fairly typical that cylinder 1 ends up leaking and misfiring. A deeper dive needs to go into this problem. Maybe the fix is as simple as changing your coolant every couple years but it seems like a design deficiency to me. Small clarification I should have made earlier. I really don't think the engine cycling and resulting thermal expansion is as extreme as what is explained in this video since the engine needs to maintain a certain operating range for emissions and to maintain the heater. I don't see the engine dropping more than 20 degrees Fahrenheit. For example in the winter the engine rarely shuts off. That leads to one of my only other gripes I have about the car, I wish the car had a temperature gauge. I've read a lot of antidotal explanations online but nothing in my mind pointing to a true root cause.

WARNING! This vehicle contains a boobytrap that can add DAYS to your repair. The 17 cam hold-down bolts with a gold color are Torque To Yield (TTY) and should not be reused because there is about a 50% chance one will break off in the engine. None of the manuals mention this and none of the rebuild kits include them - we had to order them through a Toyota dealership. If you don't already own a bolt extractor, get one before this stage of the repair.

CAUTION: This vehicle contains a booby trap that can add DAYS to your repair. The 17 gold colored head bolts that hold the cams to the head of the engine are Torque To Yield (TTY) and should only be used once. None of the manuals mention this and the spares are not included in any of the rebuild kits. The odds of breaking one off and needing a bolt extractor are about 50% so flip a coin and maybe you get away with it when you torque them to 20 ft lbs as the creator of this video does. We couldn't find replacements anywhere on line and had to get them ordered through a Toyota dealership.

Had a 2005 aka 2004 built Silverado, till the head gasket blew on me April Fools Day!~ Only 167,000 Miles, but got it with 57K miles in 2007 from my brother. Caused the power steering & braking system to fail at the same time, happened while driving and ended up in a cemetery easement.

Reading through comments now I’m wondering if my 2014 Prius 2 got messed cause I kept driving it after getting my engine replaced and finding out my ac doesn’t blow cold. Maybe there was a leak all along that developed into another head gasket leak.

Tradu text folosind camera foto I understand that on the 2014 and 2015 models of the Toyota Prius, they changed the cylinder head gasket to a better one. This is true ? Plus, Toyota recommends changing the water pump after 200 miles, which is the main reason the head gasket fails. Thanks!

One of the most rewarding accomplishments I’ve done in a long time. Did this on my wife’s first owned and beloved vehicle: a 2004 4runner SR5 with 204K miles. Just like the guy said, “ if you did everything right, it should start right up.” I can’t thank Gasket Master’s enough for posting this DIY video!

I have a question does machining the head affect the timing? And how am I supposed to know how much is too much because I heard that toyota heads are one time use because its an interference engine. Great video🎉🎉🎉

It can. The Car Care Nut is adamant that folks don’t do it. But I do trust GM here. They’ve done a lot. If I end up doing mine, provided it doesn’t get overheated, I’m just going to clean the surfaces and go.

My only complaint is the following since you had the heads off already. It would’ve been a good time to change the lifters even though nothing was wrong with them. It would’ve been cheaper to just get that out-of-the-way and change them because they are notorious for lifter problems. And second, you should’ve just changed the push rods as well, even though they look good they don’t cost that much but other than that, it was good video

Top dead center only really matters if you are setting a distributor and Timing. These have crank shaft position sensors so you don’t need to worry about top dead center.
