Like you Bald, I went alone to Ukraine from Malaysia in summer 2010,winters of 2011, 2015 & 2107 speaking only a little Russian. My friends thought I was crazy but knew I was knowledgeable on the ex-Soviet Union. I stayed in apartments for weeks in Kiev, Odessa, Dnipro and smaller towns. I did go off the beaten track, mingled with locals, rode on board old Soviet trams, masrutkhas, trains and met amazingly beautiful devushkas (women), genshenya (men), babushkas(old ladies) and tasted local fare at many flea markets and also the many famous 'Puxtata Kacha' outlets. The people are most friendly, helpful and curious about us far away foreigners. Ukraine is a huge, wonderful place to visit, safe to stay, rather cheap too! Hats off to Bald for showcasing the good, bad and many still-Soviet side of Ukraine ! Hmm...if only damn Putin would keep his hands off Ukraine..(sigh) !
