Easter Egg: When Bald said he was "taking a Roadside Picnic ," he was referring to the fact that Andrei Tarkovsky's classic philosophical Sci-fi movie "Stalker" was based off of the book by the Strugatsky Brothers, "Roadside Picnic." When he refers to himself as a "stalker" throughout the vlog, he's alluding to the fact that the Stalker in Tarkovsky's movie was a person who believed that there was a room among the Soviet ruins which would grant your deepest desire if you walked into it (regardless of whether you were aware of this desire or not). The Stalker's self-appointed role was to lead the dispossessed into this room, much like Bald's vocation is to guide us through these long-since-forgotten ruinous landscapes. I'm planning on making my next KZbin video on "Stalker" so I've been doing research :P

My grandfather had lots of friends who have effectively built this place - research directors, advisors - they fled the country after GKChP. It's a shame that it's in neglect. All the objects within are made to type, the same types used everywhere in the country, so these scales, chairs, window frames, doors, shelves, EVERYTHING is famliar. The whole city of Rustavi was purpose-built to house such metallurgical industries. This factory was built in five years, right after the conclusion of WW2. The first furnace became operational in 1950, just 2 years after the city's inception. In a decade, the city was producing 9% of all metallurgical output of USSR! But it is also a site of a V century city, the capital of an ancient kingdom, and there are remnants visible today. The central administrative building is rumored to involve Stalin himself in its architectural design, the one with the mural you've seen in the beginning of the video. Have you guys ever heard of the nuclear research institute in Abkhazia? Not advocating for anyone to go there, but check out the photos - it used to be gorgeous.

@dryerflyer2 жыл бұрын
I'm a chemist as well and that's what went through my mind. Here are a few of things worth noting for everyone else. 1. Mixing chemicals can produce gases that you cannot see/smell that will melt your lungs. 2. When you open a bottle and want to 'smell' what is in the bottle, you should not stick the bottle under your nose. You hold the bottle in front of you and 'waft' your hand over the bottle as if you are lightly sending the gas in the bottle towards you. Never put it right up to your nose. 3. Old chemicals anywhere are highly likely to have converted to other compounds with time. If you decide you want to use a chemical that is labeled and has been on the shelf for 50 years, the odds are not in your favor that the label is correct.

Not all of them were shot in Georgia, but Danelia is a very Georgian director emotionally. . Comedies: Rezo Gabriadze - short films, very Georgian, everything you can find "Be healthy, dear!" (1981, Gomelauri, Kikabidze) "The town of Anara" (1976) Eldar Shengelaya - "Cranks" (1974), "Blue Mountains" (1983) Nana Mchedlidze - "Imeretian Sketches" (1976), "A Real Tbilisi Man and others" (1980) etc. . Director Otar Ioseliani - many films shot both in Georgia and later in France. More contemplative films, essays. . Directed by Tengiz Abuladze. The films are very Georgian, he shot both comedies and heavy dramas. Comedy - "I, Grandma, Iliko and Illarion" (1962). Dramatic trilogy about Georgia - "Plea" (1967), "Tree of Desire" (1977) and "Repentance" (1984, Grand Prix in Cannes 1987). . Georgian films are difficult to get, especially old ones - they have specific fans and there are few of them. I'm also afraid that most of these films will not have English subtitles, some of them are just in Georgian, and if they are in Russian, Georgians have a very heavy accent, which is not always understandable to foreigners who have studied Russian.

@Misanthropic.Measures that matters not. Having had a few serious sprains in my time, I felt it with him. Doesn't take much sometimes. One of my worst was slipping on an unseen pinecone on a sidewalk. I was very concerned until seeing him running a bit and then walking along the railroad ties. 😊 I have little doubt that the initial pain and concern was real, but his joke and genuine laughter were also refreshing.

This was an amazing episode. I wish this episode would have been an hour long, at least. The weather was absolutely perfect as well.
@neilsaunders93092 жыл бұрын
What has happened to the English language in the last couple of decades? It used to be sufficient to say, e.g. "I wish [that] this episode *had been* an hour long, at least", but under the baleful influence of American English (at the lowest imaginable register) we now apparently require "would have" instead of simply "had" to express the conditionality/hypothetical nature of such a statement. I call this linguistic atrocity The American Conditional. That aside, I agree with Brian Streufert's sentiments here!
@StreuB12 жыл бұрын
@@neilsaunders9309 Hi Neil. At first I was really wondering what you were getting on about. Before I commented though, I did a little reading on "had" vs "would have," as I didn't think there was much difference. I now know the difference (loosely) between conditional perfect and past perfect. Grammatical tense I guess is something that we all learn (try to learn) early on but is not something that generally sticks. A good positive result for a Thursday morning over here in 'The Colonies.' ;-)

@18:05 Never mix unknown chemicals together, since not only explosions could occur, but also other exothermic reactions, which could boil and splash over or release toxic gases etc. Very dangerous. This red solution could have perhaps been potassium ferricyanide which could release hydrogen cyanide, when combined with a strong acid. And this salt was also used in iron(II)-ion stochiometry (Prussian blue reaction).
