Apparently the girl who took order was not Malaysian but a foreign worker properly from other south east Asia country. She didn’t get what you want and misunderstood that you didn’t want to order any drinks. So she call the man, properly the boss of the coffee shop to handle when there is customers refuse to order drinks. She passed the wrong message to the man, that’s why the man seemed very unfriendly at first.

I am a penangite. I think you misjudged that gentleman who you claim was rude. He was not rude but unfortunately he was scolded by you for nothing. Firstly, let me explained to you. In Penang, the coffee shop/restaurant and the hawkers that sell he food are totally different person. The hawkers(sub tenant) rent the place from the shop(main tenant) to sell their food. They don't sell drinks. Drinks you have to order from the shop. You can say they are different entity.The first and the second attempts you ordered your drink from the food seller/hawker. Since they sell only food they did not bother to take your drink order. The third attempt you ordered your drink from a young girl who don't understand what drink you want maybe from your different pronouciation of the drink. Your fourth and fifth attempt was from that unlucky waiter whom you misjudged him as rude. From what I see is he tried his very best to be nice to you but unfortunately you release your frustrations on him by raising your voice. Anyhow he still recommended you the ambla Juice which you claimed was nice. Maybe you should thank him instead of misjudging him. Another point I would like to highlight to you is that in Penang there are certain coffee shops/restaurant( main tenant )who charge a certain fee for those customers who don't ordered drinks from them. The reason is that you occupied their tables/chairs and they don't earn anything from you. They have to pay rental for their shop and if you don't ordered any drinks from them they don't earn anything from you.

This is something what I generally don't understand. If there's someone filming, obviously making a video for youtube, why the owners or staff don't try their best to satisfy that customer? I mean I don't expect being treated like a king and that's not the point. But it can be a pretty good move to get some more customers in the best case. Or even many more customers. Instead most of the staff is just lazy or they just give you an average customer service. At least if I was a restaurant owner, I would take the chance. And beside that it can be so much fun for both having a meaningful conversation or just joke around a bit

Hi there Carlos. Just as local Malaysian from KL like a me who had worked and stayed there. My best advice is stay clear of eating at those coffee shops insisting to ordering drinks over there. Instead you could just do a takeout and head to somewhere else. Honestly, I can tell you that there is no such thing as to force a customer/tourist to order drinks in KL or even in JB. The only sign you will see at most is no outside food, but a must to order drink is uncalled for. This coffeeshop owners are just too bloody profit oriented and they care less about the quality of service. Lastly, do visit places where locals eat and try to avoid touristy food places cause you will later notice the overprice differences.

You were in Chinatown of Penang. That's why you are experienced this rudeness. I would avoid this part of town. Also, the food item @8:38 is called "banh mi", an iconic Vietnamese food. It's interesting that the Chinese would copy anything that's popular, then ruin the original taste!

This happened to me in Penang too when I visited in 2017. I only ordered food. Did not want to order a drink- but the drinks guy was pissed. I had a medical condition which meant I could only drink sterilised water- which I drank from my water bottle- which I sterilised every evening……I was super paranoid about eating and drinking in Georgetown- I had never seen so many rats in my life! The food tasted good- but the rats really put me off my food….
@bloggerhock Жыл бұрын
I am sorry to hear about your medical condition. But to be fair and honest, foods and drinks are usually not under the same business operators in most coffee shops setup in Malaysia. The drinks are usually sold by the coffee shop owners who supply the space and tables and chairs, also rent out the stall to different food hawkers. Being able to make a few bucks here and there from customers who eat there is part of their small business operations. Just sharing that so you are aware and understand the cultural differences, And if you are concerned about the hygiene of street foods or hawkers, and I would also suggest you go to more established dine-in restaurants or fast foods. There are plenty of such options in Penang/Malaysia.
@雷鳗鱼 Жыл бұрын
sorry bout that,unfortunately most chinese kopitiam are operate like this, we local already accustomed to this kind of culture, not saying this is good, but there's nothing to be done, but most eatery like cafe or malay operate one would be much more friendly than chinese kopitiam,some hawkers street food do have hygiene problem i agree with that, i also suggest only to visit dine in restaurants since u have medical condition, do give malaysia another chance next time

@Ccb88888 Жыл бұрын
@@GoodGood-vb8gm This system is stupid. Why confuse tourists with such a system? As a foreigner u have to learn the culture first in malaysia, and how to order food in the restaurant or stalls, like the youtuber Ichang and Blimey, before they come to places they always learn first about the culture, the people, how they work and communicate with each other, some people in malaysia doesn't understand english, so when u talk to them and they can't respond to u, ask other people to help u like other tourists out there, and that guy don't even rude to u, he dont even raise his voice, he's using facemask, n its your accent that sometimes makes them dont understand what u said, if u cant said that word in english, said it in malay words, maybe then they can understand u, like what other KZbinrs do

I can understand that local people don't understand English. But if you are sellers, any kind of sellers on tourist spots, then you need to do something about that. You can use translation apps, you can ask the tourists to write words they say that the sellers don't understand etc. At least the sellers should try to show some politeness, and willingness to serve and understand. That's something that I didn't see on the video.

Travel light and act confident in any situation. Use your gut instinct and walk away if it doesn't feel right. Don't tell people you're travelling alone it's none of their business. You're meeting your husband, brother, best friend etc but also don't overthink it. You'll have a wonderful time and feel independent and liberated. I admire you and hope you have many amazing adventures. The world is your oyster so don't avoid one place over another unless the locals have advised that it's dangerous. Safe travels 😀

Rude, bad attitude and you are forced to purchase drinks or else you need to pay for entrance fee even you order food but yet serve you with the unwelcome behaviour. This will not happen to Sarawak at all. You will love Sarawak after your visiting. Food is much cheaper and people here are courtesy and you are freely to sit anywhere without paying anything and always being welcome without paying anything when entering any food parade here. No one will force you to purchase any food or drinks. No crap policies like penang. Should boycott visiting Penang food parade. Teach them a lesson when they don’t have business.

Hi friend, unfortunately I have experienced the same in food courts in Sibu, Sarawak too. Same thing, no drinks ordered, no seating. However Sarawak is a much friendlier place than Penang for sure.

tbh with the accent, "nootmeg" doesn't sound the same as nutmeg to someone whom first language isnt english. It kind of sounded like "not make drink"... But the staff could have handled it better.

What nonsense, the vlogger clearly started that he ordered a drink so how does any sane person can think he said “not make drink”? Stop condoning such rude people in Malaysia.

Dear Carlos, As a Malaysian I'm truly sorry about what happened to you... It is not Malaysian hospitality but sometimes the language barrier do become a problem when they don't understand what you're trying to say. Still some people just don't know how to treat others nicely... I'm really sorry for that... I hope you don't feel regret coming to Malaysia just because one man's action. Malaysia is actually a very great place for you to explore...some glitches are normal but I hope you enjoy staying here....

People defending the owner are missing the bigger picture. Yes, there was a miscommunication, but phrases like "I don't care" and "you can leave" are harsh, regardless of Carlos's accent. It's possible the owner's tone was rude too. We're overanalyzing the details when the main issue is clear: the owner lacked empathy and treated the situation like a routine business interaction without considering the feelings involved. You can't use such dismissive language with someone from a different cultural background and expect it to go over well. Defending this behavior often stems from a sense of national pride and wanting to feel superior. By downplaying this incident, you're inadvertently supporting similar future situations. Who knows how many customers like Carlos have faced this kind of treatment? I'm Malaysian too and to me, the owner was more severe comparing with Carlos. Even when Owner realized his mistake and when Carlos confronted him why he was rude, you can clearly see Owner just emotioned " I don't know "
