Enjoying following the van build and will look great. Regarding the worktop, cut a few inches off the decorative end of the scrap piece and fix it vertically on the end you cut short so it sticks up above the worktop. This will stop things rolling off the worktop behind the drivers seat and give you the extra bit that you cut short.

Haha I bought the exact same IKEA kitchen with the same worktop and when realises how heavy it is I regret exactly like you did! My main worry was the fact in an event of a crash the worktop becomes a combination of a missile and a blade flying forwards and cutting you in half (xD) that's why I put 2 M8 bolts through it and 2 5mm massive L shape brackets and bolted it with another 2 m8s directly to my garage area barrier (25mm plywood) it's not perfect but a thousand times safer than having it just on wobbly chipboard kitchen unit. Never again any IKEA furniture in a van... I learned from my mistake but it works well in the end xD take care!

I've just fitted a Metod kitchen and, yes, they're bloody heavy. I wondered at the time, if I was to do a van build, that you could rout out about half the thickness of the worktop where it isn't resting on the carcasses. That'd save a bit of weight. Also, I hope you sealed the bare edges of the sink cutout. I missed a couple of spots and the laminate has already started to peel away where the damp has got in. ☹️

Good idea. He could fill the void with expanding foam to make it rigid again. The excess off the underside is easy to cut flush with a hand saw. It would look the same but be lighter.

Was at a camping show, a van had unbelievably nice oak wood all through the ban from an old church roof and thought geeez that must be unbelievably heavy and he'd hollowed it all out, hardly weighed a think 👍🏻👍🏻 hreat idea

Looks good but not durable enough for van as fitted one and after a few spills and splashes the edges of cabinets swell and burst. I also had profiled edges to van walls as most dont have straight walls in a van. Stay clear of chipboard and mdf.

Honestly, it looks amazingly beautiful and a great explanation. However, my concern is the weight of the kitchen. If someone were to do van life, the extra weight equals extra costs. Also, when traveling, the extra weight could potentially cause engine stress over the long term. I'm just thinking ahead as I am planning a van life while going to graduate school.

Have the same thoughts around units, flat pack if possible. Even storage ones, ikea "billy" units are slimline front to back, ideal for floor to roof. Do you need to profile the back of the worktop if you fit a splash back? Good job though, check out B+Q tops for weight as well.

I highly highly recommend getting to a weigh bridge at this point and seeing how much you way as it soon adds up over your 3.5t limit. The 2 problems I can see straight off the bat is that you have used normal kitchen handles?? These are ok in a house kitchen. But will not kelp keep your doors closed while driving! And also. It is an Ikea kitchen. Their wood is chipboard wood. This means that after a while the doors hinges will start to break the sides where the screws are. Use liquid nail glue between the metal and the wood for extra support, then screw the doors back.
