Yeah its overlooked by a lot of people, since to many grain is seen as an unwanted part of video footage, but in reality it's a secret weapon for avoiding compression and creating a filmic look at the same time!

that's absurd, adding grain makes the h264 work even more as it's moving particles everywhere. The trick is to not film trees, forests, moving lakes or waters, fast moving objects in far sides of screen, confetti, rain, snow, unless all these are shot in super slowmotion. I tend to add little blur to background by masking the subject in every shot if there are lots of trees behind. the main enemy is forests and trees avoid them and you'll be fine.

@cameramaker

You have pretty messed up the container vs codec issue - MOV, MP4, cDNG are containers, AVC, HEVC, JPEG are the codecs. And KZbin utilizes mostly its own VP9 and will reencode to AV1 when views hit milions. The AVC version is made just for quick trash / recent uploads and unviewed videos, usually on a fast profile so its the reason why its so blocky. The way out would be to allow creators to pay for an extra re-encoding effort (or certified encoders, that run at uploader's end). Btw you can re-download the files, and compare their sizes if you havent deleted them, I bet the +grain will have increased average bitrates.
@RoccoGermani
@RoccoGermani 2 жыл бұрын
My bad, I mix up containers and codecs a lot. But H.264/5, prores and DNxHR are codecs, right? Thanks for the info! I'll have ot go back and check.
@cameramaker
@cameramaker 2 жыл бұрын
@@RoccoGermani yes, here you are correct now. Those four are codecs. But every codec is just sort of a "language", and its up to the specific encoder and its setting, to what extent it uses its possibilities. Its more visible in the avc/hevc things that have a very wide variety of settings and possibilities, while in prores/dnxhd its more controlled, eg. by force-fitting into their CBR target.

I like grain. But (there is always a big but): compression is there for reducing effort in storage and transmitting which costs energy/money. Grain adds chaos. And chaos is hardly compressable. Thats why the algorithm struggles (try to compress eg. pure white noise - it is not possible because it is unpredictable). I like grain. But for the sake of saving energy I try to use it wisely. Have a good day and thank you very much!

I had a mix of 1080p and 4K footage (From Iphone) that I rendered out as QuickTime 1080 HD. I noticed that the 4K shots looked somewhat better. (My time-laps footage looked terrible!) Glad I was able to help! And exporting in 4K can definitely make a huge difference, even if you didn't film in 4K, I did it for years back when my cameras were all 1080p and it worked great, and still works great to this day. One setting I've been using a lot lately for exports that I've found gives clean results is using mp4 H.265 for the render, with Constant QP instead of constant/variable bitrate. Worth checking out if you're still experiementing with methods to avoid compression. Thank you for watching and subscribing!

Please answer this for me; The video codec issue with uploading videos is making me nuts. The AVC1, by default, apparently, is what many complain about regarding KZbin videos that they post, including myself. So I see that choppy video from my PC. Now, watching the same video, as I would, but on my Galaxy S23, it looks as it should on there, provided I make sure that I go into : Settings; Advanced, then go down the list to 1080P. That's all I have to do to make it look fine on there. But No matter what I do on the PC, it looks crappy. Is there a different codec or something that KZbin requires and sets, depending on what you watch a video on? Is it my computer? The computer is about 10 years old, but it's a DELL Inspiron 7559, 64 bit, Intel i7. It should have more than enough power and resources, although seems to struggle with KZbin videos that are 1080p or higher lately. Didn't used to be. What could be the issue here?

I'm using DaVinci Studio and film grain does remove a lot of banding in H264 and H265. I'm trying to find the best settings for a film project. Do you also apply Halation with grain that is used by many pro colorist for that film look?
@RoccoGermani
@RoccoGermani Жыл бұрын
I have a bit of a different process for film emulation... I add both grain and halation but not in the same node. My process for halation typically involves using Dehancer, which I've talked about in another video on my channel. Even though I use Dehancer for halation, I still use Davinci's film grain as I prefer it over dehancer. If the only option for you to get halation is with the default halation node inside of Davinci, do that, but don't use the film grain option within that effect. I recommend adding a separate node with the grain effect I used in this video.

I was hoping for a way to completely bypass re-compression by uploading with the same settings that KZbin uses. Good tip with the grain to trick the encoder though! On another note - and this is really awkward - I know it's 24 fps or GTFO in movie enthusiast circles, but the jittery playback of 24 fps YT on a 60 Hz playback device irritates me. 😋

I'm really sorry, but have one more question. Is it possible to do that in Handbrake? I'm mostly working with just upscaling old videoclips. While going 1440p youtube is applying VP9 codec, which chaning color scheme. On my computer is always looking right, but once I upload on KZbin something 1440p+ the VP9 changes it's color scheme. I can't see the option with bt709A, but 601 on HB. But in the end KZbin is forcing to 709 anyway, so RED color becoming ORANGE and GREEN to BLUE. Can I do upscale in Davinci Resolve too without losing quality, what HB provide with simple upscale? It seems to be DR placing some tags, not sure... Ah, so many words... Just stuggling with this for quiet a lot of time. I'll see, what I can do, I guess
