This was an excellent video, you two. As the father of several adult daughters, that have all traveled internationally for business, all have been instilled with my talks on situational awareness. A few years back, one encountered two teenage boys while walking on a beach with a female coworker in South America. She watched them scoping out her and her friend. She removed her purse from her shoulder, wrapping the strap a couple times around her wrist as they broke into a full run towards them. Her companion was totally unaware what was about to happen as she was knocked to the sand and her purse whisked away. My daughter spun around, using her purse, connecting to the side of one assailants head. Shocked and stunned, she proceeded to connect foot to groin, then shin. They rolled on the beach as she scratched and clawed and even got one good finger to eye, before he hobbled away (bloodied) in defeat. Fortunately, the young men had no weapons, relying on speed and surprise as their tactics. My daughters friend chastised her for resisting and not giving up her purse with a very expensive new camera. She told her it wasn't about the purse or camera, it was about not allowing herself to become the victim. They did not remain friends and I was one proud Papa.

Yes, good for you for preaching this and training it into her. Good for her for paying attention and following her instincts. As far as her friend goes, there is often this attitude that it isn't worth fighting for "blank". The problem with that, even though I may agree sometimes when given the luxury of hind sight, is that you don't know what your attacker's agenda is. Afterwards you may look back and see, "oh a purse snatcher, yeah just let them take it.", but at the time you don't know what their intentions are and need to assume worst case scenario. If you know they intend to rape or murder you, what would you do? Whatever the answer is to that question, that's the proper response. I'm not saying to shoot them, necessarily, just respond to an unarmed attacker as if they intend to do what harm they can while unarmed. I believe this is why they grabbed her friend's purse and continued without grabbing your daughter's purse. They could see your daughter was paying attention and her purse was also wrapped around her wrist, not an easy target. The friend was likely between them, and they thought they could get away with the purse without being caught and without a fight. They were counting on the victim's mindset of "just take it all".

That happens to a lot of us! I had a really scary experience, but ok. But when you are nervous, caught off-guard, you do crazy stuff like I did- bent over INTO car to see if I had any change when a man at the gas-station asked me! Like, etc! These vids are invaluable!

I can relate. In my case I kept trying to dance around the "where do you live" question. He eventually left me alone and I reported him to a cashier. I never saw him again. I want to practice situational awareness and know how to deal with situations effectively. Give me more control

A good tactic is to ask questions yourself, which is also useful to gather information against him. Another, more easy tactic would be just to say "aha" or "yep". And you can ask him why he want's to know that.

+Glitter. Ink. Ammo: I agree for the most part. However I think that it's not about "feeling comfortable" but more so that your words mean something. One of the more important ideas of the book is the aggressor ignoring someone's "No". It's very similar to the idea you learn in a Tactical Response course, and of course one of the reasons I keep taking their classes, is that if you act like prey then that is what you are. No means no and there is no need for saying thank you with it. Saying no politely is wonderful but if you have to continuously repeat yourself then it's aggression.

My sister was at Ohio State when she was approached by a Christian religious group. They asked if she was interested in doing a Bible study with them, which seemed innocent enough at the time. My sister, a Christian, refused as she had school work to do and couldn't spare any time. Later, a warning letter was sent out that human traffickers were using Bible study invitations as a ploy to get young women alone. We're almost certain the same people were talking to my sister. As she recalled they were white with some broken English; nothing suspicious about them or what they asked. Scary stuff tho.

As a handsome single Christian man the pastor's daughter invited me to her home group for Bible study, pastors two daughters and a few other single girls. "Guys will be here next week." After the second week of being the only guy there I politely declined another week, seeking to transfer to another small group bible study with at least a mixed group ♂️&♀️ One of my guy friends said his small group was good. Something I’ve noticed in my 8 years working as a full time EMT, most of the sexual and physical assaults I’ve responded to, the perpetrator was known to the victim. And in the case of the young woman whom was raped and murdered in Iowa, the man who killed her knew her as well. So my point is, more often than not the person who may attack you may be someone you know rather than a strange person.

Of course there will be radical feminists calling this advice "victim blaming/shaming" but to ignore such good advice based upon that is to ignore reality. Wicked people will take advantage of people who appear to be victimizable. An attacker can just as easily surprise a man walking with headphones in as they can a woman. Try hard not to be that victim with vigilance, awareness and action. It is never the fault of a victim of crime when it does happen as that fault lies squarely with the perpetrator but please, please, do your best to minimise your chances of being that victim. That goes for men and women. Men and women generally face different kinds of threats but the defences against them are very often similar whatever your gender. The advice in this video is good for all even though it may be more specific to women.

One demands true equality, just give the same treatment and the same rights and equal recognition for equal deeds by both sexes to both sexes. I stand by the right for women to be equal in rights and recognition. I have been married 20 years to a very successful woman and the idea of trying to control her in any way is simply unthinkable (and likely impossible) from my perspective. To control anyone is in fact one of the greatest crimes a person can commit against another. Then there are those that hate men and don't want equality but want the tables turned. Those are the type of feminists I had in mind when I made my comment on responsibility for one's own safety.

I was born and raised in Augusta, GA so that will always be "home" for me, but I've lived in Wisconsin since I was in high school. I can tell you that people in general are far more polite and eager to please in general down south, men and women alike. In truth, that was actually a huge part of the culture shock for me. For the years it was difficult for me to make friends in WI and many of my friends parents thought I was so wierd because of how polite I was and how I always made an effort to approach my elders and speak to them while offering thanks and respect for having me in their home. Some appreciated the effort, but many saw it as bizarre and even shady, believing that no one should be so nice and that I likely possessed some kind of nefarious hidden agenda. It was quite disheartening if I'm being honest, but people are just different here. For years I thought everyone just hated me because I was raised with southern manners and an inherent sense of respect for my fellow man, but people up north are just, well, rude lol. They're just more curt, short, and less prone to all the little niceties you're likely accustomed to. I still have yet to fully embrace the northern sensibilities and I doubt I ever will (I'm now 32, so I've lived here for just over 15 years now), but the sociocultural differences between just the northern and southern United States are unbelievably vast. At any rate, most everyone up here is already pretty adept at wearing a "f*ck off" type of attitude, and many women up here can be pretty cantankerous by comparison so I think they've got it down. As for those in the south however, I can definitely agree with Mrs. Poet when she says that southern folks probably need to work on their demeanor, attitude, and presentation a bit more when it comes to "stranger danger", so to speak lol. Actually this is something I've been trying to work on with my mother. She was raised in WI, but lived in GA for over 20 years so a lot of that Southern charm rubbed off on her and sruck with her. Even so, she's naturally a very caring and kind person either way (she used to be a social worker before working in the school system with special needs children, so a very compassionate soul at her core) and has a tendency to over-share sometimes. Dad is of course a gun-carrying protector to an extent, but he's far too sociable and frankly a bit too oblivious to truly be effective in the role (talks to everyone and anyone, way too honest with every random chucklef*ck he meets, sees way too much of the "good" in people, etc.), so I've always tried to pick up the slack. I plan on showing mom a few of the videos with Mrs. Poet in the hope that maybe she'll take the word of an experienced and knowledgeable woman a bit more seriously than mine. I just pray that if God forbid anything were to happen that I'm around to stop it because honestly I'm not confident in my mother's ability to protect herself. She refuses to carry a firearm and is less than diligent in consistently carrying the other tools I've provided her. She has a collapsible baton, OC spray, and a double-edged fixed blade karambit. I've taught her the fundamentals in how to use these tools effectively, but she doesn't bother to learn anything but the most rudimentary of basics and she DOES NOT practice or hone any of these skills in any way. I do my best to test her on these things periodically and attempt to teach her other useful skills and tactics, but she thinks it's all pointless and she considered and referred to me as "paranoid" for years until I sat her down on three or four occasions and explained how I'm not paranoid whatsoever because that implies I'm fearful, and that I am not fearful precisely because I'm prepared and vigilant. There's quite a marked difference... I actually became quite angry with her once when the topic came up in conversation with some of her friends and some extended family and I overheard her refer to me as paranoid. That was one of the first times I sat her down and had to explain why I am the way I am and why I do what I do - spoke to her privately of course lol, not like I called her out in front of everyone or anything. Anyhow I do hope that she's able to see things more clearly after hearing some overdue female input on the subject...

Discernment and situational awareness go hand in hand. Not only seeing what is going on around you but being able to correctly interpret it. It is a skill that you must learn and practice to get better at. Also the “inner witness” or gut as you call it is your helper. Practice listening to that small, still voice. A good goal is to be in the right place at the right time doing the right thing for the right reason so you produce the right results.

Great video John! Would you ever do a type of woman’s EDC with your Mrs. Poet? I think it would be very beneficial to give some examples to women of flashlights, defense pens, pepper spray, ect. Appreciate the logic in the nature trail and not alone. I don't under any circumstance tell my wife what she can or can't do, that being said there are a very few things i stand firm on one being she does a lot of craigslist and facebook market place deals and my strict rule there is absolutely NO one comes to our home to pick up or drop off, and she NEVER meets anyone without me, either I go along our I go meet them myself and it blows my mind how many women I've met in these deals that came alone or with their children and most of them presumably unarmed and completely unprepared for the worst case situation

I’m glad you spoke about the modesty and covering. statistically the immodest fashion industry marketed to women matched with the sick condition of many men now days is responsible for a spike in sexual assault and rape. I lived a few years in some parts of the Middle East and things like this was unheard of due to most girls covering and men having a religious obligation not to look at them.

I have always been a very security conscious person, my dad raised me to be that way. I am not paranoid by any means, but your car passes me or a street up ahead on a walk more than once you bet I am going to notice. Obviously that’s just one scenario, but even I have fallen for the sense of obligatory politeness. I was at the dog park about a month ago and struck up a conversation with a guy as our dogs played together, like you do. Very attractive, unassuming, polite, and enjoyable to talk to. Too much so. My dog is afraid of most people so she displayed a typical level of nervousness and I was talking about her being a scaredy cat (only because it was very apparent). I made sure to mention my other dogs (I said plural for effect) do a better job as protectors and security. He was trying too hard to get my dog to like him. He proceeded to ask me about my other dogs and where they were and if they were at my house. I skirted around the question but my warning bells were already going off and I made a polite retreat. I had already continued talking to him too long and knew I needed to leave. He followed behind me (I left him standing alone on the middle of a field so that much was fine) then stayed with the crowd while I headed up the big hill and when I got about half way up he proceeded that way as well. Listening to your gut is the most important thing you can do. This man could have been simply the nicest guy, but let me tell you, he gave off very Ted Bundy vibes as the interaction progressed. The too handsome, too nice, too easy to talk to and tell too much to. And I knew it in my gut I was right. I felt so stupid replaying the conversation in my head, but that was my lesson about feeling the need to be polite and continue to talk to someone after you’ve already gotten a bad feeling from them. Don’t let the conversation go on, just throw up that cold shoulder and retreat.

And if you're in a conversation, you don't have to answer any questions - you can even turn it around and be the one who asks questions, like an interrogation, where does he come from, what is he doing, what car is he driving aso.. If he should follow/target you, just film him, so you have something for a Police report.

I was totally on point with everything. I practice it & teach my DD... Until the "someone helping you" part. OMGoodness... I did this very thing, when my kiddos & I were moving. A total stranger, whom said he lived in our apartment complex, offered to help us move boxes out of the nearly empty appartment, into my truck. I didn't even think about what could have happened, had he chosen to be violent. My daughter was with me too. Shutter to think... Gratefully, the only thing that happened was a sad sob story & request for money. To which I said I had none & quickly got us to my truck. I already thought it was an odd encounter, but was Grateful for the help. Thank You Soooo much for sharing this Helpful video!!! Bless Y'all

As an OTR truck driver, I haul a lot of high value loads. There are people out there that are looking to hijack those loads. Whenever I’m asked what are you hauling I always say I’m empty or when I’m asked where I’m headed, I always say I don’t know, I haven’t been assigned a load yet. This behavior has kept me alive and trucking for 22 years. Thanks for the great video!

Sharing this with my wife, we just had several girls locally kidnapped from a grocery store parking lot and at least one was sexually assaulted, luckily they managed to escape the car at some point and the suspect killed himself later....but it was legit just a normal grocery store we've been to dozens if not hundreds of times.

I totally agree with this. I have been in the EP field for 34 years now and have taught situational awareness classes free to women for the past 20 years. Lot of common sense thinking will help a great deal. Started my daughters training when she was Six years old. Start there training early as the world we live in is not what it once was.

+Theron: yea, i walked out a Family Dollar last week when 3 teens walked in looking sheepish. One went straight to the register and appeared as though he was pulling his hoody UP? It's winter comin' inside and pulling it down, i get it. But why down, then pull it up. I politely excused myself from the customer i was talking to & walked out. It didn't feel right.
