I had a LOC-G experience, which was nearly a crash, but finally I managed to get the situation under control. I was transitioning from a QS MXL to a QS GT 400. In other words, I had never experienced a yoke - my only previous experience was 160 hours with a joystick - and there was no way to do a training run, because the GT 400 is a single seater. So once I was airborne, I had to learn yoke control whilst airborne - by myself - solo - pretty nerve racking, I can tell you. Landing was fine - but in the roll out, I subconsciously perceived the yoke as a steering wheel in a car - since I was back on terra firma.. Which made me forget all pitch control. So I bounced violently until I finally lost momentum & eventually came to a halt. Only then did I realise what I'd done.

I had a similar experience on a training flight. I had never flown yoke and the inherent perception that it was a steering wheel made taxiing very difficult. I didn’t get into trouble because my instructor could see I was not handling it and took control.

When I was a kid in the 60s, private flying was touted as the wave of the future for half the adults in the country. Today everyone knows very well that 85% of drivers can't control their cars if a slide occurs, follow too closely at speed, are constantly distracted by their phones, and blame everything but themselves relying on no fault insurance to iron out their messes. They are allergic to rules and discipline, preferring to be allowed to do as they wish as they drive. It is no wonder holding a private pilot license is 20x rarer than having a PhD (200k vs 4mil).

This is SUCH a good video. Thank you for emphasizing that even small increases in approach speed can make a big difference in the energy that needs to be dissipated in the landing process. Keep up the great work, ASI!

Unfortunately the aircraft POH/AFMs for most small piston GA performance data do not provide corrections for several important variables including runway contamination and slope. Also keep in mind that runway temperature can vary considerably from the advertised OAT. Pilot proficiency, technique and aircraft condition can make a difference in achieving book values. Applying a suitable factor to book-derived values is an important risk mitigation strategy. For instance, I use a factor of 1.5 for takeoff and landing distances in an airplane I am comfortable with and 2.0 for an airplane that is new to me.

Great video! Just last week I had a really scary moment doing touch and gos. I lost control on the ground and seriously thought I was going off the side of the runway but was able to rotate just in time. As a student pilot the crosswinds were right at my endorsed envelope and the last wind check indicated gusts that were much higher. My mistake was two fold: after I landed I was so in the rhythm of “touch down, flaps up, full power” that I didn’t make sure I was settled completely on the runway before going back to full power. I also didn’t hold in ailerons into the wind once I was on the ground. Turns out wind still affects you even after you’re down. Just using rudder I started wobbling and every time I overcorrected it got worse and worse. Easily the scariest time I’ve had as PIC, and I’m sure I won’t make those mistakes again.

After I turn from base to final, I never look at my airspeed indicator again. I look out the window and land the plane. It's a feel thing not a numbers thing.

That sounds sketchy as hell lol. A few quick glances at the airspeed indicator definitely wouldn’t hurt but whatever works for you. I’ve done quick local flights with all the instruments covered and I can do it, but there’s a reason for vref. Definitely helps with not coming in too fast, or worse too slow

Overwhelming, right? Rest assured, no one, ever, took it all in at once. Keep reading, flying, doing things over and over. Review, practice, and review again. Pieces will start locking in. You’ll build a foundation of knowledge and info and everything will build up from there. Know too that not one person in the world knows *everything*!!! You’ll always have to be diving into the POH, CARS, etc etc for info and updates.

Reduced insurance rates. lol, that's a good one! If we stop bending planes the result of Increased profits for insurance companies is more realistic. It would be a very long time and a cold day in hell before any insurance company said well we don't seem to have so many ground incidents these days so lets lower premiums. I mean really? The rest of this vid is valid but will be ignored because of that little bit of BS at the start, pity.
@dermick

If there were no insurance claims, our rates would drop due to competition. If everyone had a claim every year, the rates would go up or the insurers would get out of the market. Yay capitalism and the free market! I agree that there is definitely room for innovation in the insurance industry, but my math seems to show that aircraft insurance is a pretty risky business without a lot of profit.
@waynemayo1661
@waynemayo1661 3 жыл бұрын
It's not BS. It's a business decison. If claim costs go down, one company will reduce rates to get more business. Then, other insurance companies will reduce rates in order to compete.

That was my automatic go to in my thought process right at the beginning. It set a wrong tone for the rest of the video for me. As for the other commenters saying the rates will go down with less accidents.....Never.

* "Average LOC-G claim is $78,000." Since many GA aircraft are worth less than that, I have to wonder - does that number include bizjets? Not a credible statement without more detail. * So how does too much airspeed lead to LOC-G? You gave no specifics. Are you talking about wheelbarrowing? * Picture of the stable approach was a three point landing in a nosewheel airplane. Tacky! * Stable approach has been debunked as a contributor to bad landings. Flight Safety Foundation, 2017, reports that 97% of (jet) unstable approaches land okay. There’s so much to it than just “unstable approaches.” * Runway drift exercise - good! * Separation of lateral and longitudinal control - data supports that! As do videos. * Video didn’t differentiate between excursions off the runway side and overruns. GENERAL - too many platitudes, too few specifics. Lacks substance, lacks credibility.

Listing insurance cost as an issue with LOC-G is disgusting and not related to safety. Thanks, but I’m now done with this channel. No one cares about your insurance cost if you have money to be a private pilot. Bye Felicia.
