I’m reminded of a definition of true horror I heard years ago. It’s a seeping feeling that crawls into your subconscious making you feel fear long term. I listened to this before work this morning and that’s exactly what happened. I spent the day on edge, this close to overwhelming sense of dread infecting every thought. The pacing and imagery you and the author provide brought this story to life in a way I’ve never experienced. Your both truly masters of your craft .

Love the utter dehumanization of the lead here. The mechanicus violated him on every level. The physical violation of chopping limbs and mounting plates on his torso, the sexual violation of needlessly neutering him like an animal for the sake of never reproducing again, and the spiritual violation of snipping his brain and never allowing him to function as a human beside maybe on a very, below animal standard way of feeling the basic emotions of acknowledging pain, sadness and knowing something is wrong but never being able to actually think deeper about it. He did this to himself by referring to the very heart of the forge and a religious icon in the eyes of the mechanicus as an "abomination" directly in front of the Techpriest. This is heresy in the eyes of the Mechanicus. There is a reason their religion is tolerated in the Imperium. But this is what sealed his fate in this story. The Imperium would not want to fight a war with the Machine Cults. They control a large portion of Imperial industry especially in weapons and equipment production. Also the gene seed for new chapters is modified and adapted on Mars by the Techpriests. They also are in command of the Titans of the Imperium.

I've listened to this twice now. Excellent storytelling and pacing and imagery, the ending is truly nightmarish. I especially like the detail of the Tech Priest's teeth rotting, as if she doesn't care and embraces the weakness and decay of her flesh, soon to be replaced by the machine. I can see how a lot of them would care little for their physical bodies beyond subsistence, grooming and basic hygiene are probably a secondary thought. Imagine being a normal human on an alien planet putting your trust in that? Also how Gregarious notes that Mechanicus perfectly understands Imperial social norms but they intentionally violate them.

There is something paradoxical in the real world about emotions and decision making. There are some peoples with brain damage, that they cannot form emotions properly. But that means that they are often in the endless loops in all of mundane decisions.. like what apple to take from the hundreds present in the shop. What pen to write with, even if on the table are two same. Insignificant, small things, nothing to wonder about for normal people. Emotions often creates shortcuts that rationale cannot decide. My man. Wtf are you talking about. He insulted the heart of the forge as "abomination" thus the tech priest made him an abomination. It's not even the slightest bit subtle. As an AdMech player, I really love this more 'horrific' depiction of the Mechanicus. They are too often just seen as allies of the Imperium, if not its defacto subjects. Few people within the Imperium (or even in the 40k fandom) realize what they truly are.

@@kingofsapi In some ways, the servitorization process is even worse than Stroggification. Namely because the Strogg don't seem to give a damn about the quality of their results nor do they seem to place any moral value or lack thereof upon Stroggification of humans. The Strogg don't seem to take pride in what they do. By contrast, the Mechanicus takes pride in producing fine servitors, and they believe that what they are doing is _holy._ To me, at least, few things are more terrifying than brutal fanatics who believe wholeheartedly that they are performing just and benevolent deeds.
@kingofsapi
@kingofsapi Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, the way how little the general servants of the Mechanicus have in regards to human lives is horrendous. But I feel equally horrified that servitors are such a general part of Imperium life that even non-mechanicus servants of the Emperor aren't too fazed by the idea as well. Like a high ranking officer or Inquisitor can sanction a person to be turned into a servitor with such callousness, it's as if they were requisitioning for supply of potatoes. I think fanaticism is dangerous without a proper, 'guide'. The Emperor even when he walked among the living did invoke a certain amount of fanaticism in the Imperium, such as disdain for xenos and the fervor to which the Legions fought against their foes, even if said foes were technologically superior.
