Really good! I'm a lifelong Avril fan but I largely see the lyrics the same way you did hearing them for the first time. It IS about her being single, but it's loneliness and lacking a sense of direction. It doesn't HAVE to be about a relationship. Sometimes you feel lost and you need someone's support, and an outside influence that can just change your life. And she's saying "Hey, I need you. I don't even know who you are. I don't know what you look like. I don't know your name. I wouldn't know you if I passed you in the street. But I need to find you, and when I do... I'm with you." and I know exactly what that's like. The person is hypothetical, but you know they don't have to be. You're not looking for someone specific. There are a lot of people out there who could be that person. That's the point. And of course, still being lonely with plenty of people around you. Because they're not what you need to lose that sense of loneliness.
