Here in Ottawa, Canada, it's different. None of her singles are played except for the song "Head Above Water." "Head Above Water" is still played, even nowadays. Actually, that's the reason I fell in love with Avril. I watched her music video for HAW a week or so after it came out, and I was just barely eleven. It was my favourite song in the world for 1.5 years, and it would play on the radio every day (mainly at night). (Now it's only every three months, which is still impressive, considering it's three years old.)

Avril belongs to a generation of artist that gives you the feeling of 'you are okay like you are, you can do it' and make all the outsiders on earth feel united. I missed this so so much! Todays musicians are much more about money and being famous and all this bullshit themes. This unpersonal music nowadays cant touch my heart and soul. Her vocals on this album are amazing. Avril has always been such a raw artist and doing her own stuff. This album shows a complete vulnerability that I don’t think she has showed before. I think I figured out why. The first stanza shows an emptiness we could all understand in our own way, but instead of the chorus telling us"you/I got this, you/I have the power", it's a prayer, a submission that we hope to have joy and pride in ourselves after everything fades away, and then comes the empowering line, something so simple that it feels like a spark of light in the darkness. By the end of the song, it's almost like we've gone on a journey with her and she triumphantly sings the last part of the chorus loud and clear. It kind of reminds me of "praying" by Kesha, where her whistle note at the end feels more of a triumph than anything in the song. Basically, our brains empathize with their victory and we feel joy with the singer. Some of us get emotional as we feel ourselves being freed from those negative thoughts, even if it's just for one second. To me, this whole song is a prayer that things will get better. Now, due to conditioning, I get teary eyed even at the first chords of the piano because the emotions are so harsh.
