The most peculiar thing I remember reading about pilots taking control of a bomber about to take off for some death-defying mission over enemy territory was that they had to sign a form of some sort handing over Air Ministry property to the pilots to permit them to take this valuable aircraft and its crew and contents and then get shot up by fighters, peppered by flak or suffer whatever else came their way.

The document is the aircraft F700 (form 700). The pilot signs for the aircraft, the F700 documents the fulel load, weapons load, the documents what servicing has been carried out, in a different format its still used today for every flight.

Slow Running refers to the Merlin 28 and 28 engines fitted to the Lancaster B Mk.III and Canadian built B Mk.X. These engines were fitted with the Bendix Stromberg pressure injection carburettors. Slow Running isn’t a problem as such, it refers to the Slow Running Cutouts which are operated by the electro-pneumatic rams - one for each engine carburettor. The Slow-running cutout switches have two positions - the Engine Running position (UP) and the Idle Cut Off position (DOWN) - that is used only for starting and stopping the engines.
