What always comes to my mind concerning these orchestral musicians is their lifetime of dedication. While the rest of us as children were outside playing after school, these people were indoors practising on their instruments, doing their scales and arpeggios and broken chords. As children these people made provision for their adult future doing what they love doing. I admire them so much. Even though my main passion is the piano, this is my favourite ever piece of music.

In 1961 I played piccolo in Ypsilantic Civic Orchestra under the director, Dr. Wm. Fitch. Hours of practice by all performers. We rehearsed two semesters before Dr. Fitch had us perform it. It's more then fingerings those arpeggios but getting into the emotion of this piece. Performing this piece of music was one of the highlights of my life. Yes, I teared up as I listened to this performance. Never thought in 1960s I would watch it on an cellphone.

I love the ending of this piece, where the macabre goings on of the night are displaced by the serenity of the coming of dawn and the beauty of the new day. Les anges ont fait fuir les sorcières, la coda est d'une beauté céleste sublime, planant et enveloppant le Mont Chauve pour l'ultime plaisir des mélomanes. I believe this the version that Rimsky Korsakov arranged after Mussorgsky's death. The "original" version is even more unhinged, with a choir and lots of theme changes. It's interesting but doesn't flow as well as this version.

The bombing was carried out by The Real Irish Republican Army (IRA) splinter group who opposed the IRA ceasefire and the good friday agreement, signed earlier in the year. The bombing killed 29 people and injured 220 others, making it the deadliest incident of The Troubles in northern ireland. Telephone warnings that did not specify the location were sent 40 minutes beforehand, and the police inadvertently move people towards the bomb.

Who is spreading these stupid rumors about sleepless nights, etc.? In 1860, Mussorgsky received an offer to write music for Mengden's play "The Witch". "Night on Bald Mountain" is not the fruit of nightmares, but an illustration for the play. Mussorgsky wrote this work at the age of 27, he called it a sinful prank.
