For a clarinetist whose trio life often consists of nothing more than Beethoven Op 11, Brahms Op 114, and Zemlinsky, as great as they are, this version of the Faure trio comes as a breath of fresh air and makes me want to put it in my repertoire toute de suite! Robert Marcus

The second movement is one of most beautiful that Faure ever composed. The trio works fine with clarinet.

Only a marvellous connection among the musicians in a chamber ensemble makes possible to listen the heaven with Faure. Very nice version!

Sounds like it was written for a clarinet instead of a violin! Thank you for sharing this ensemble

The poignancy of this beautiful performance is perhaps increased by the realization that the composer never really heard this piece; like Beethoven he was almost completely deaf in his last years. He was also notoriously uninterested in orchestration; I'm sure he would love the clarinet here, if he could hear it. Especially with these fabulous performers. They are all top-notch, but as a pianist I especially admire M. Le Sage's luminous playing. Mille remercie.

It was Faure's idea to include clarinet. He originally wrote it with clarinet in mind.

Cette transcription pour clarinette est un enchantement. L'œuvre y gagne en solidité, richesse de timbres et profondeur. Il faut dire que les trois interprètes ne sont pas n'importe qui...

This trio usually moves my heart, it's heavenly music...this version has left me very cold though, never felt it quite captured its magic. The clarinet suits it fine, though!

Der Dialog zwischen den drei Solisten ist intim und gut artikuliert. Der tiefe Ton des Cellos klingt besonders bezaubernd. Hörenswerte Aufführung!

Except a fantasy for flute and piano (actually an exercise for the ParisConservatory, Fauré had never written any chamber score with winds. This trio (his last music hamber published when alive - the unique quartet, his last score, is posthumous). It seems that the clarinet version was the initial purpose project,; he soon changed for the classical piano/strings version. Perhaps Fauré did not take a wise decision, sinc the sound of the clarinet fits wonderfully with the specific composer's melodic style, and the intsrumental composition is attractive. But htis music is scnadalously underrated (as is the composer from a general point of view). Let us first make it more often played, and then we will open the clarinet versus violin debate - which is actually not a debate but an open choice.

Faure did take a wise decision. The problem is the coda of the first mov. it doesn't work with clarinet. The beginning yes but all the last part it doesn't. The clarinet doesn't have that sound attack of a string instrument and it blends too much in the chalumeau register with the cello, making it sound more like a duo than a trio. Hence the wise change to violin

It seems that Fauré thought actually to the clarinet instead of the violin, which is the final form of this trio. I am not sure of this. I read it somewhere, but I cannot remeber where. Except a minor piece for flute and piano, the chamber music of Fauré is always written for strings and piano (or strings alone for his quartet).

I don't like the cold almost rubatoless interpretation in places in the first movement - they seem to get into it in the slow movement
@thekendrickhuynh5 жыл бұрын
Faure hated overly rubato music. He wanted subtlety but never grand gestures.
