When I first heard this, I did not know what I was hearing because I had never heard this music before, even though I love my classical music! Oh balderdash, I sat there, on my mattress, near tears. I couldn't hold them back. It strikes a cord within me. Just the first hearing! I don't understand it. I don't understand how such music, how the strings can be pulled in a certain way to resonate so clearly and resolutely with the human heart! It is near magical. As near magical, as I'll ever get to. Now, it's my favorite tune, for whenever I want to cry and just cry.

In this piece is particularly delicious the constant use of sharps and flats keeping the "malinconia" softly floating in the air. Grande Puccini!!
Tears streaming down my cheeks every time I hear this piece. In this recording, the larger string ensemble, in combination with the profoundly expressive playing and slower tempo makes this one of the best renditions I've ever heard for sure

Wahrlich ergreifend!

To my concern, apart from the 4th act of "Manon Lescaut", (in 1893), the "Crisantemi" theme was re-used in 1985 by Alex North, when writting the music (based on Puccini's tunes), for J. Huston's film "Prizzi's Honor".

It is an inspired symphonic work, I dare say, of "mahlerian" character, of the "1st period" G. Puccini along with his "Capriccio Sinfonico". It was written in 1890, to mourn the tragic death (assassination) of king Umberto of Italy, named "I Crisantemi" because of the flower used in funerals. It depicts the most profound sadness. Two years later, when composing "Manon Lescaut", Puccini used the "Crisantemi" main theme in the 4th act (the desert), to describe the tragic end of the story of the two lovers & the death of Manon. It was undoubtedly his 1st great operatic success.
