Thank you for this amazing tutorial. Im almost done with my apprenticeship ( its been a long hard road ) i started very late in life and couldn’t take time to stop working for 2 years of school so this has been very helpful. I just wanted to at very least thank you for making this as i know you are bot getting anything for doing this. Im about to take my test in a month so i feel prepared after watching these kinds of videos and studying hard. Take care thanks. M . McNabb. Michael McNabb.

Man I wish we had a class like this at my school. They didn't teach us hardly anything about structures work and that's where I ended up so now I'm struggling at my job.

I sure wish you could demonstrate dimpling sheet metal for flush rivets. I would really like to see that done.

Great video, thank you. Why do you use pneumatic tools instead of electric? For example, the drill. Why not a cordless drill?
@1donagin Жыл бұрын
Pneumatic tools get cool when running instead of hot. They also make no sparks. However, I often use cordless tools also.

Great video. Where does a rivet shaving tool get used?
@1donagin5 жыл бұрын
I am not a fan of the shaving tool. It is used to mill the head of a flush rivet that protrudes more than is allowable. Google NACA riveting. In my experience, it tends to tear into the base metal as well, which is a problem with modern alclad material. I did use one this week to cut the shop head off of a rivet on a bulkhead I was replacing, so damage didn't matter.

to know the exact length of rivet you want, you have to measure the thickness of plate. After that , there is a formula go get the exact length of rivet according to the plate thickness. the formula is : plate thickness + 1.5*diameter of rivet=rivet length of your plate. Rivet length should be in 1 over 16 and diameter should be in 1 over 32. These are just the things I learn't in my aircraft structure class. Thank you
@1donagin6 жыл бұрын
This formula is for the ideal. However, it does not work in the real world, because the material comes in varying thicknesses by the thousandths of an inch, and the rivet is sized by the 16th of an inch. For this reason, there is an acceptable range. What this range is depends on the rivet gauge, but for AD rivets, 1.33 to 1.5 times the shank diameter works well. Harder rivets like DD rivets require shorter lengths, such as 1.0 to 1.33. Always check the manual if you are not sure.

Is this the same material you heat treat in later projects (5 or 6). Regardless what type of aluminum and how thick?
@1donagin5 жыл бұрын
This is 2024 T3. The material we heat treat is 2024 O. After heat treatment, it is 2024 T42. The 2 just means it was done after the factory it would be 2024 T4 if the factory did the same thing. It takes artificial aging to go from T4 to T3 - but if I had an oven that could do it, it would be the same as the plate here.
