My mother had a Singer sewing machine like that in a cabinet. My father bought it for her right after he mustered out of the navy after WWII. She used it all the time to make pillow cases from flour sacks. She still had it when she passed and it now resides with a niece who still uses it. They don't make them like that anymore!

That welding helmet might be a Fiber Metal Products brand. When I was a kid, Youngs Hardware had an accounting office in the rear of the building. You were able to pay your gas, electric, and water bill there. My parents would write a check and I rode my bicycle there to pay the bill.

I have been curious but never found a solid guide for Stanley screwdrivers. They said Hurwood on the ones that were black paint or tar-like. It’s not a wood I could find but I realized it could be the model or namesake for the design. Could not make a good guess on wood species on yours. Winchester worked with Simmons Hardware before and during the Great Depression. They possibly weathered the economic downturn better because people didn’t have extra money for a Winchester weapon but they could buy pliers and screwdrivers.

Yes, you should have taken the sewing machine. Those little motors are really handy, sturdy, and will run forever with a bit of care. Also, the cabinet has some quality hardware on it. Nice job on the Winchester screwdriver. I have a 7130-8 inch screwdriver that is the pride of my collection. The handle is fluted and does not have the steel cap on the back. It appears to be a walnut-colored stain. After seeing how well yours turned out I will have to clean up mine.

Hah, Thread cutter and rope, I knew it, I'd be interested to hear more on refurbishing the rope I have some of my fathers, I wish I had his rope skills ! I'm a sucker for boxes of hardware too, they always come in useful sometime, and those rivets were a bargain. That Winchester s/d came out beautiful, I tend towards dark handles but mainly as it covers any staining and sets off the brass so well, as soon as I hear the name Winchester I immediately think of Jimmy Stewart and smile ! The Kraeuters were an amazing bargain, they looked a bit rough, but underneath they're barely used. As for the Thor drill, such a great casting that's going to look great when it's cleaned up, seemed to run well enough too, glad you didn't get fried !

I knew what is there straight away. The machine cabinets were once very common up my way. You don't see too many of them anymore. Family heirlooms now more or less. You have enough drills, make that steam punk Ray gun. Might be a fun project.

I am quite sure that bell is going to ring rapidly, not a single hit. The spring loaded bit has one of the conductors to it so it will electrify the magnet (solenoid) and when it moves, it will break the circuit, and the the spring will move it back to make contact, over and over. As long as there is current to the wires, it is going to make a wonderful racket! 😁👍

I welded a good many years with one of those helmets. My current welding helmet is an electronic lens rig. I'm not a luddite. 😁😎 Dad gave me a Thor drill motor that they were tossing at the foundry. One bar on the commutator is dead so I occasionally have to spin it to start the drill. My singer that I use cost me $15.00. Now they are going for $100.00 or more. I won't sell mine. The mechanical linkages are strong enough to punch through two sheets of leather. The new one I bought for Lydia has plastic gears. It was a lot more than $15.00. 😁😎

I once renewed a Thor 1/2 " drill motor for my hero, Eddie Stan (Stanislawczyk). He insisted on a new cord, although it really didn't need one. 50-years-old and it would still wring off your arm.
