Check out this hand strength exercise for the left hand (fretting hand). Every two finger permutation is dealt with in isolation in order to gain a more balanced approach.

As a beginner, these “warm ups “ can feel like a full exercise at times. Warming up to need a break… but you will get more comfortable in a short amount of time and it will actually be a warm up.

My hand when doing 3rd and 4th fingers: WTF? Me: Lol - good exercise to do, thanks
@skybluemarshall

The cool part about these exercises is, they immediately identify your biggest weaknesses and how you rely too much on the easier fingerings. For me, the 3-4 fingerings are the hardest. I know that I don't play the minor scale enough or this would be an easier exercise. I suggest flip flopping the exercises and doing the hardest ones first. I imagine that, many of the more casual players are like me. I practice in bursts, often picking up my bass for 10, 15 or 20 minutes at a time and I do it several times per day, rather than practicing properly for one or two hours at a time. I've developed a bad habit of starting with the same exercises all time. Eventually, I will log a lot more sessions of the first few exercises, such as playing major scales, because I will put down my bass, before ever reaching the exercises at the tail end of my routine.

Is there any reason you don't go straight to the 1st and 2nd frets to practice? Though in the beginning it would be harder, I figure that, after some time, it would help more than practicing in the 5th and 6th etc. frets.
@talkingbasslessons
@talkingbasslessons 10 жыл бұрын
Probably just because it's a nice comfortable area. No need for stretching or awkward arm positions. However, it's absolutely fine to try from 1st fret to 5th fret for a change of scene or a bit more of a challenge.

It’s supposed to feel more natural as you move up string, because your middle finger is longer. And you lead with your index finger on the way down for the same reason

so I really struggled with this after my 3rd week of owning a bass. Anything with little finger (pinky in American) and it goes badly as with others. My question is do we slow right down to the point where we try and get the best sound - or do we try and struggle to maintain speed at loss in quality ? From learning point of view I mean? I'm finding I literally cant reach with little finger so have to slide the hand up and down to get to it which slows down massively. I know its doing good . thanks fot the great video.

Just stick with it. There sort of exercises are boring but do build finger strength and dexterity. If you have real problems with your hand size, you can try Simandl technique instead of 1FPF - uses three fingers only (1,2,4 or 1,2,3 above 12th fret), and a lot of shifting. Pinky is supported by the third or second finger where it matters. You might also consider short scale (30") instead of 34". Keep in mind these exercises build finger strength better than any gadget I've tried if you're thinking about that. As far as speed, just be patient. Practice with proper technique (no buzzing, slurring etc.) always, as fast as you can. As your fingers become more comfortable you will be able to play faster and faster.

Well Alistair, funny you should mention that. Cardiacs are/were an awesome band from the UK that don't get half of the recognition they should. Prog meets Punk meets Circus meets Zappa (I put Zappa in his own category!). Tim Smith the lead singer/guitarist/songwriter is pretty much a genius but unfortunately suffered a stroke and heart attack in 2010 and has been off the music radar ever since. If you like your music a bit different then check them out. There's a massive cult following and you can find lots of album tracks and live footage kicking about on KZbin. They were a big influence on loads of popular bands (Blur being one particularly famous one) and Mike Patton is a big fan. I'm a huge fan and could rant on all day about them. With Cardiacs, you tend to either love or hate them but all the fans tend to be hardcore obsessives.
