Gallows Pole, Battle of Evermore or the Kennedy Center Honors performance of Stairway to Heaven by Heart with the 3 surviving members of Zeppelin in the audience and John Bonham's son playing drums. Best cover ever. Jimmy Page nearly jumped out of seat he was so excited and Robert Plant was moved to tears by the moment.

As a bassist I'd say it's always that way with bassists, but JPJ is one of the most dynamic bassists, a great writer plays the tunes the way they should be never over-doing it note wise. On this song he's very precise and I notice he plays with a pick a lot but not always - sometimes he uses fingerstyle.

This is Zep doing prog rock. Plant has said that in his opinion the musicianship of Page, JPJ and Bonham in this piece is the best in rock. It was a challenge for him to find the lyrics to fit such a complex and huge composition I think he succeeded though, yes? He wrote them while recovering from a terrible car accident and was in a wheelchair when it was recorded

@greggpangle38214 жыл бұрын
When they recorded this, they recorded the basic track with Page only playing the rhythm track, and the rest of the band thought Page was a little nuts and didn't have much faith in the song. Page stayed in the studio overnight and recorded all the overdubbed guitar tracks and solos. When Plant, Jones, and Bonham heard the final product, they were astonished. Page really is an absolute Master and Genius. I put him up there with Beethoven, Mozart, and all the other great composers.

I agree, I think he's in that bracket. If you can find albert hall 1970 when he goes away from robert in Dazed and does that insanity with the bow,( for some reason harder and harder to find these days on youtube) that is pure musical Genius, not to mention his ability to use Music as the conduit of the message. When you feel that power, perceptible under certain circumstances, expressed with deliberation through music, you know you are dealing with something not of the mundane. The How and the Why is not a concept our tiny minds are able to contend with, some may say deliberately so, all we can do is say the man is the man is a Genius, and I agree.

Originally called The Wheelchair Song during the sessions because Robert Plant had to record it in a wheelchair after re-injuring his achilles following a near fatal car crash in Greece with his wife in the summer of 75. The words chronicled his upcoming summer vacation to the Greek islands with wife and family. "Sandy lands on holiday" Instead it almost killed them both. When they went to Munich to record after the accident, the studio was down a flight of steps. Plant was on crutches, and fell over studio cable. So he was chair-bound thereafter and Achilles Last Stand was born.

A galloping example of a Led Zeppelin! I think you make a good point in your closing comments about this song - By this time it's interesting how in this example, Jimmy Page's guitar riffs tie-in with the gears and switch-ups from drummer John Bonham, it's almost machine-like and a very effective manufacture. It is also evident to me that around 1974/75 Page had perhaps found the 'producing' sound he was looking for and I think we can tell that these recording sessions were handled and mixed to the highest order. Tremendous! Thanks for uploading - Liked.

It's always good to see young people getting in to led zeppelin, but when it's someone who listens deeper, who understands music then that takes it to another level. Getting my comment in before KZbin notices this video. This is my favorite Zeppelin song. I used to play drums back in the day and my drum teacher played this for me and said he wanted me to learn to play it. I looked at his kit that only had ONE bass drum and pedal. I was convinced this was done with a double bass. My teacher informed me it was done with one foot on one bass drum with one pedal. This ended up becoming my all time favorite groove to play and truly made me appreciate fancy foot work in non-double bass drum songs because it's harder than it looks and you basically have to train your brain and foot to be on autopilot or else it ain't happening.

I feel you so much on your points about John Bonham. I try to imagine what they (and especially he) could have done in the near future he hadn’t died. Considering how funky he could play and the fact that he has been sampled by hip hop artists it would have been interestingly hear him in the late 80s and early 90s. And even now, considering how much he seemed to love taking on new styles it would have been interesting hearing him take on trap beats and all haha.
