This man is not just a very skilled craftsman, he is an artist. He just eyeballs some of those measurements. With all that wonderful woodwork I can't help but laugh at the table/bench he does his work on. It has the look of being slapped together with scraps laying about the shop.

You could build a house like this, no glue no nails, earthquake proof and with an extra dovetail brace between the beam and the rafter probably also hurricane proof.

That was super, the first joint was fine, but when the second had a dovetail, it made me wonder, the third sort of helped but it flummoxed me, when the fourth piece of timber appeared I thought this was definitely a two beer post, when assembled I saw this is a roof framing joint, elegant and strong, now with my remaining beer, I'm going to toast you for an excellent post. Could you perhaps do a sharpening your chisels post, for without really sharp tools, you won't get the fine results you show us.

@@tombryan720 I'm not very familiar with the Japanese varieties of wood but at times it reminds me of lime wood or pine or some version of soft maple. I'm only familiar with Japanese oak but the wood he's using appears way to light for that, I think.
@tombryan720
@tombryan720 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidrustylouis6818 yeah I was just trying to think of something similar maybe to practice with. For the carving aspect it might be ok to substitute basswood but even bass you gotta have chisels you can shave with. They say it's it's a softwood but it's pretty stout for softwood. White pine might be it for some practice. Joinery of all kinds are interesting to me and want to learn more.
@davidrustylouis6818
@davidrustylouis6818 2 жыл бұрын
@@tombryan720 I'm heavily interested in joinery as well, I work with it every day & love it. Basswood would be a "friendly" wood to practice this Japanese joinery I think. In my experience, basswood is wonderfully easy to slice, chop & shave, although it might not be best for structures, I use it to practice on all the time. & carve too.

I can't answer for him, but I know that in the past a lot of woodworking was done with green wood. It's faster (no waiting), and much easier to chop and chisel. But since they were using strong joints like the pegged mortice and tenon, that would prevent the wood moving too much as it dried.

Are you are you kidding me the only reason people do this type of craftsmanship is because iron was so expensive 500 years ago
@alexandrau6096
@alexandrau6096 Ай бұрын
In Japan they still use this technique out of 3 reasons: to be able to repair pieces of old temples and palaces and to build new family homes, because even after all these years it’s proven, that this kind of building without nails keeps the wood in a better shape far longer than buildings fixed with nails, not to mention that this technique is earthquake proved. Nails could be rattled out by an earthquake, but this kind of joints won’t budge during an earthquake, which in fact is the reason why old temples and palaces are still standing despite having whitenessed many earthquakes and wind storms over the centuries. If you ask me if I would rather build a house which could break after a max of 30years, or if I would use this technique to have a house that could survive 300years, I would definitely use this technique 🤷🏼‍♀️
