I luv that this show displays what I consider to be the real side of black women. They are striving for a goal, getting their educations, fit, and beautiful. Not this false propaganda that these love and hip hop type of shows display of black women constantly cursing each other and fist fighting. It's such a negative portrayal and definitely NOT the norm even though that's how the media wants everyone to see us. These young women are the type of black women I know and see everywhere.

I think the Orchesis need to revamp their Instagram and post higher quality videos/pictures. The team is good but the social presence isn’t there and i think that contributes to why they don’t get the shine they deserve!

Baddie👏🏾😘🥰 they could have the most cohesive team on that swac but none of that will be noticed by most if they don’t have the proper exposure. It’s 2020 a social media presence is a requirement at this point to reach a bigger audience as the majority of supporters aren’t able to physically be present at events.

Erica Andrea This is very much true in the times we’re in. For the type of attention and “Wow factor” they want they will definitely need the proper online presence to help promote the hard work they put in. The main way for people to see your growth is to document it. I love the direction ODC is headed in.👏👏👏👏

@@ethan8497 once you reach that level yes, it is very competitive. Especially for dancers of color. Our spaces can be limited based on what a director and/or choreographer have in mind. But dancers who reach that level have the ability to learn choreography quickly. They may also have to make it up quickly. My nephew is a professional dancer and choreographer. He's done TV, movies, Grammy's, even the Kennedy center for the Obamas. His talent and those who work with him is phenomenal. Some of these girls may move on to have careers as dancers as well.

Lyric need not blame herself or compare her team to other SWAC teams. The issue here is the program itself and the auditioning each week for a spot. Other teams have a dedicated set number of girls and they get to grow and progress together as a team each season. These girls do not have that opportunity. Lets just say on average for even the best of the Orchesis they may dance an average of 5 games total? Some perhaps more and some perhaps less but the fact remains that they do not get to feed off of each other's energy or even be in the same seating section with other girls who may motivate and compliment them when they are seen as a whole. This team will always lack in those areas due to this decision. I know why they do it this way but it will always leave them a bit behind the other SWAC dance teams. The Southern Dolls for example have an entire season to prepare for the Bayou Classic whereas the Orchesis do not even know who will be dancing that week. This will always leave them at a disadvantage.

@@tessiesanders1 GTFOH! What does asking for donations have to do with anything I said? How will donating change the FACT that they have to audition to dance each game which is STATED several times each episode? Get out your feelings and read English. Give corrected information if I stated anything in error or shut up. I didn't shade anyone I stated that the Captain is not responsible for why the Orchesis lacks the same cohesion as the other SWAC Majorette teams because of EXACTLY what you stated. They are a dance company, not a majorette team only. The only dancer who is guaranteed each week is the Captain only. She is the only one who will know each stand or field routine through repetition or through her creating it. FOH With your damn donations, they will not change this fact... In other words, you state that I don't know what I'm talking about while either not reading or not comprehending what I wrote. The Captain stated during this episode that she feels responsible for the team as a whole not being given the same accolades as the other teams. I just pointed out why her team has it harder than the others which is not a diss it was encouragement. You are either illiterate or just stupid while trying to judge others.

Just wanted to say that i’ve been watching ‘Taking the Stands’ and I’m not sure who Lyric is comparing herself to. I’ve seen other Majorette captains without a team behind them. Other captains squabbling over some guy. Lyric brings something of herself and what the Grambling State University Orchesis Dance Company is all about. Hard work, dedication, leadership, commitment, love of dance, and all of this while balancing school work, family and social outings. By being part of this show, Lyric represents here University, honorably and respectfully into our homes. She gives credit to the hard work of her coaches and team mates. This is true leadership. This coming from someone who lives in a big city who’s public schools don’t even have a football programs, let alone marching bands, majorettes or cheerleaders. I’m in awe of what you do. From Vancouver with love...

The should follow the advice of the older woman and just have 15 girls on the field. The weekly audition is not good for the psyche of the girls. Like the other commentor said, they should just build up a strong team that can get close to one another and perfect their craft TOGETHER week after week, as opposed to keeping on shuffling the team every game. Their team cannot be consistent because the lineup is not. Point, blank, period.

I started watching this and I have no idea about dancing but there needs to be some structure of dancing for real world places and doing the majorette thing. They seem to want the cohesiveness of the other schools but at the same time continue the legacy of having a dance company. It seems like they have a lot of students and maybe what they should do is hold several massive auditions and kind of do an A team and B team. Each team gets to perform for football games but at least these groups can stay together and they can still remain a company.

I think the girls need lessons in self-esteem and internal validation. They worry too much about what other people think and are trying too hard to gain noteriety like other popular HBCU teams . But the main thing to know is that it all takes time, and it wont happen in one semester.

Just so you'll know, ODC has a HUUUGGGEEEE fan base. They've been around over 30-years. They've traveld the world with The World Famed Tiger Marching Band of Grambling State. ODC has no issues with noteriety. It's A. OK to admire other dance lines, as other dancelines from the SWAC to the MEAC admire them. These HBCU dance lines admire one another.

I meant notriety for this new style of dance they bring to the company. They are obviously in transition to a new style of dance than previously done before. But they aren't getting the props they deserve yet for the change. Just listen to lyric at 14:50 and going forward, you can just hear the hurt in her voice when she talks about wanting her girls to be elevated and how she wants to be a great captain that everyone remembers. So overall, they maybe traditionally world famed but they are trying to break away from tradition and make a new name for themselves.

I understand their process, however, the thing that makes the other teams more popular is the ability for the fans to learn and connect to the dancers. Having a set number of girls on the squad each year will provide consistency. If they don’t make the squad they can still learn from the company throughout the year. People like cheering on their favorites but if it’s not guaranteed that they’ll dance, there is no incentive to follow the dancers.

i’m sorry but auditioning every week is such a stupid concept because it never gives the girls a chance to settle down in terms of being clean . They always complain about looking good when every other week there’s a new girl(s) dancing who probably has never been to a football game and is struggling whether it be nerves or not used to performing often in an outside setting. Take a team like the foxes or the dolls that have the same girls every week ... they’re gonna be clean because they’re used to handling the pressure from the get go and are on their ps and qs all season but that’s just my two cents.

What do the actual coaches do? Why is all the pressure on the captain?
@azasiae.9306
@azasiae.9306 5 жыл бұрын
Racytae Because at the end of day, the pressure is going to always be on the captain and that’s for any team. The captain is the one that has to chose the right stand routine when the band plays not the coaches because they aren’t the one’s dancing

She is not okay. She is captain. She thinks freely. She is able to teach her cheerleaders to stylishly dancing attractive. Do the best she may improve her skill idea.

I feel so bad for Octavia not making this game, I can tell she felt like she was better than some of the girls that did make it...and I would agree. And Lyric is such a strong young lady doing great things, she is a great leader but it's okay to cry and rest ❤️

I like how they have to tryout each week to earning a spot for the dance line because it keeps everything fresh ♥️ and no one person is greater then the organization.

I am confused as to why people say the weekly auditioning is harsh. They aren't auditioning to be on the team they are auditioning to perform, right? Or am I misunderstanding? This happens all the time in every dance show I have seen. Some dancers perform some weeks and not others depending on skill set and preparedness. Seems fair to me and everyone gets a chance to perform.

I had absolutely no idea until watching this series that this was actually a dance company and not a dance team. Has this always been this way! I’m from Louisiana and never knew this, I’m soooo shame! 🙈

Also i don’t think the girls should have to solo audition every week. Everybody should be in it and if they don’t look good they get cut. Tryouts every week is a waste of practice time.

( someone please answer ) Ok , so I thought there’s a consistent team. Like a total of like 30 girls and they tryout every week to make that certain game. But then I see a clip with like 40 people and a bunch of new and familiar faces ... so how is it set up ?
