Thanks for the Video, I am more than a decade old Fan of DD-WRT although dropped using it since 2015, as moved city and router, Now for the love of IoT & Home-Assistant, I needed a separate device for my switches as my Current TP-Link gets busted 😂 at around 30 devices. I digged out this very old TP-Link MR3420 which I had bricked trying Open-WRT, had to open and do serial connections to reflash and make it run DD-WRT again. I am able to flash some last known best dd-wrt firmware version from 2020 to it and was looking for this kinda Video, Thanks again to your knowledge for being exactly what most people would want to see while going with Wired Connection Bridge Mode 👍🏻👍🏻 Love and Respect ++ from India 🙏🙏

Thanks for the clear directions on how to do this, I am using Untangle on a 1U server as my main router which is quite a bit faster than the older Netgear Nighthawk I have DD-WRT on. I just had to have wifi for mobile devices and IOT devices.

@@AwesomeOpenSource Its not that I dislike PF-Sense.... far from it, but Free BSD networking settings are much more confusing to me than Debian's are lol. The only thing I don't like about Untangle is its paywall for basic things like proxy caching of downloads as well as the better traffic shaping menus. At least virus scanning remains for free :)

One problem though, my device doesnt show an I.P address assignment in the other DHCP server, how do I go back to the user interface for settings?

I am using DD-WRT for maybe 10 years already on many different routers. So far I have no negative thoughts about it. Some routers misbehave but I don't think this is firmware problem (dd-wrt I mean) - rather routers themselves Btw I am using few wireless routers as WAP already - exactly with dd-wrt

Can you explain host name and domain name please, in your optional settings info ? I understand the "router name" field, but what are the others ? and are they needed?

Hostname is essentially the machine name. Not required to be unique, but you should always try to make it unique. Domain name, in this case is referring to your local domain. So, you can just pick one for your home network as long as you use it consistently, like myhome.lan, or thisnetwork.loc, etc. When you put hostname in front of domain name, you get your FQDN, or fully qualified domain name (e.g. laptop-dell-1.myhome.lan). HOpe that helps.

yes confusing as the option is gone. mine worked after power cycling the dd-wrt box. soft reboot from menu did not work.

Hi, thanks for the video! I have a similar setup where my DD-WRT device is getting the ip addresses from the OPNSsense router. Is it possible to set up a Virtual AP that also uses the IP assignments from OPNSense? Every thing I find online wants me to enable DHCP in DD-WRT for a Virtual AP. Thanks!

You should be able to setup the virtual AP just like any ohter. If it's a dumb ap, then it will just pass traffic along.

No suggestions. Definitely check out their router database when you find something you’re thinking about buying. Also, my personal way is to look on eBay for lots and then check before bidding or buying to see if they are supported.

Is there away to make a dual band router be a range extender under dd-wrt last time I tried this; I think I did something wrong though

On the DD-WRT wiki, there are different articles on makeing a range extender. I know you can setup "Mesh" (range extender really) with it in certain modes, but there are some good articles on just making it a "repeater". I think that's what you'd be looking for.

You'll need to scan for the device on your network, and make sure the IP didn't change. You should (however) have set it as a static IP. You might check your control router and make sure it's showing the device as connected as well.

I ran the same exact settings but after the ap reboots there is no wifi being transmitted and I cannot access 10.222 via browser. I assumed it could be the hardware at fault but it works fine as a router on fresh default settings. Plugging it into any NIC results in no detection and solid orange light. @@AwesomeOpenSource

I use FreshTomato and would like to know if there is a big difference in wifi signal between dd-wrt and FreshTomato.....(I use it also as Access Point)

I didn't see a big difference in wifi signal (I did not adjust the strength settings in either when I was testing, so out-of-the-box), but I also had some serious stability issues with FreshTomato on my Asus hardware. I'd like to try it again on some different hardware at some point.

you cannot disable the routing in the Management tab. That option has disappeared from the firmware. still seems to work after power cycling the dd-wrt box. A soft reboot did not work. Thanks. It would be great if you updated your firmware and did this again as It is confusing not having the routing checkbox to disable.

Let me see what I can do about an update. It could also depend on the hardware you get as to the version you need.

I am agree with you, because I just downloaded the latest firmware (01/02/2024) but it seems to be that the interface changed a little different can you please take a look and you try to make another video for us so we can go and fix our Linksys E 1200 router I am confuse what IP ADDRESS I need to put so I can go back to the DDWRT interface again in case I forgot to do something thanks in advance, and that was a good video for us

Thanks, this worked for me. The wlan is bridged so gets an ip-address from the modem. Now I want to add a virtual wlan with a different ip-range. I can do that, if I connect to it it gets an ip-address from the new range and I can connect to the router page (on it's page in the new ip-range) but... No internet. Any tips on that issue??

You'll likely need to create a bridge to the main LAN from that new wlan. The DD-WRT wiki probably has detailed how to in order to do that.

That's the zoom level of the browser. I zoom in because I don't see well, and I zoom in to make it easier for people who may be watching on their mobile devices (phones) to be able to see what I'm doing more easily.

No better than any other router that is known to run DD-WRT. I just happened to have a set of Asus routers I got on ebay for a low price, and they worked well with it.

You can name it any way you want, but a host name is just a name that you can use to call the device by on the network. My network domain is MacG-Home , so just sticking to that scheme for this.
