A big reason why Steve Buscemi doesn't talk in this movie is because it's an inside joke between the directors. Their previous movie, Fargo, Steve played a motor-mouth who would annoy everyone for talking too much. So they thought it would be funny if he did a character that barely talked and everyone kept telling him to shut up.

This movie takes a page from the play Waiting for Godot and runs with it. Like the play it is a comedy about nothing. In The Big Lebowski there is a LOT that happens, but in the end none of it had any significance. The Germans were simply taking advantage of Bunny's absence to fake a kidnapping. The Big Lebowski took advantage of the "kidnapping" to steal the $1M and get rid of Bunny. They weren't working together. The screenplay is a masterpiece of writing. Every single pause and "uh" was written in the script. You saw Jeff Bridges (The Dude) in Iron Man as the main villain (Obediah Stane).

Hey James, as a book guy you will be interested to know that t h e movie is based on the wildly popular detective novel THE BIG SLEEP (1939) by author Raymond Chandler. The novel has been adapted many, many times into movies, radio and TV shows and even comic books

It’s as though the story itself was looking to be adapted yet again, but got the wrong address, and ended up with a main character who was completely uninterested in being hardboiled or a detective, no matter how much the story insisted on being told.

Love the bowling related details in this movie. Using the hand dryer on the ball return. Using the ball polishing bag. The poster of Richard Nixon bowling at the White house lanes. The Dude listening to a cassette tape of what perfect strikes sound like. Donnie's luck changing and a seemingly certain strike delivery was instead a 9 - foreshadowing his demise. Some of it doesn't make sense, but sometimes life doesn't make sense. Still hysterically funny, one of my favourite movies.

Trivia for The Big Lebowski: - Released in 1998; written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen (The Coen Brothers). - The Dude is based off a real-life friend of the Coen brothers, named Jeff "The Dude" Dowd. Walter is based off of a fellow filmmaker, John Milius, both in looks and politics. - The Coen brothers like their actors to stick to the script; according to John Goodman (Walter), the only improvised line in the film that made it in was The Dude's "human paraquat" line. Every other line was pretty close to the script, including the words "dude" and "man." - Jeff Bridges, who played The Dude, wore many of his own clothes for the film, especially the sandals, which he still has to this day. - The word "man" is used 147 times, almost 1.5 times per minute, and the word "dude" 161 times. - Jeff Bridges almost declined the role of The Dude because he thought it would set a bad example for his three daughters. But his middle daughter told him that they knew he was just acting. - The recurring joke of "Shut the f**k up, Donny" was a reference to Fargo, also done by the Coen brothers. There, Steve Buscemi played a character who wouldn't stop talking. - John Goodman said that Walter is his favorite role of his own, and the most fun he's ever had on a movie set.

For the amount of laughing you did while simultaneously experiencing shocked disbelief, this movie deserves better than 7/10. You rolled pretty well with the dream sequences. And you’re right about one thing: the kidnap schemes don’t make sense. Did the Nihilists know Bunny was going out of town? Did the Big Lebowski know or did he think she was really kidnapped? I do not think they were working together. I don’t know. You could construct a reasonable explanation, but it hangs together poorly. But ultimately it doesn’t matter, because the story is not the point. All the weird people having strange and funny interactions was the point.
