My mom has driven a school bus for 20 years now. She's encountered a good dozen kids with awkward names who rode her bus at one time. Hands down, the most hilarious one was a kid who had a hyphenated last name. Smart-Dass was this poor kid's surname....I imagine it would be the perfect name for a career in stand-up comedy or something tho lol

So this is the hilarious part to me....they could've just given him one half of that name by choosing one surname, dropped the hyphen & prevented his name from being so funny. But they obviously didn't make that choice 😅.

Awesome people, here in the states we have some odd nicknames. Richard is called Dick or Dickie, Anthony is Tony, William is Bill or Billy and John is Jack. Guys who are called Buddy can be a lot of different names. Same for girls, Dorothy is Dot and so on.

I've met 2 women named "Crystal Ball." One of their middle names was Lynne, so she was "crystalline ball" if you said her full name. My Aunt Helen married a guy whose last name was Waite, and rather than having people be told to go to hell and wait, she started using her middle name instead. I never met Anna Reichsiek, but I met her sister and her cousin, so I know she's a real person. Reichsiek is pronounced like "rexic." I had a client named Deepa Ashit (we confirmed it by getting a copy of her drivers' license). Another client's name was Wanna Sugreekunt (also confirmed with a copy of his ID). I had a co-worker whose last name was "Shitole." He pronounced it like "sheetle," but it still was fun to see whenever his name popped up for any reason. Fun names abound! Especially when there's a language difference that makes a nice name in one language mean something strange is another.

Great release, the theme of funny names is really funny. Generally speaking about Korean names and brands written in English, I have noted many times that they spell them incorrectly and do not sound like the original Korean names. For example, the surname is Pak, but they write Park, where did the letter R come from? Eun sounds like Yoon, but Yn is correct. Chan is written as Jang, Chon as Jong or Jung. Yon or Yeon spell Young. The same well-known Hyundai brand sounds like Hyondae.

I don't know about Korean but in Chinese, words used to be spelled differently. Zhou used to be "Chou". Cai used to be " Tsai". The romanization changed after the 70s. I wonder if this happened to other languages around the same time as well, or at different times. Older generations may have different sound English spelled names in different cultures.

Korean has multiple romanisation rules too, and what makes it worse is that most Koreans don't stick to just one -- unlike, say, the Chinese who would usually pick just one among Pinyin, Wade-Giles, Jyutping, or whatever and stick to it. But many sounds in Korean don't map neatly to English in the first place. Consonants in particular often sit between voiced and unvoiced sounds, and like many other East Asian languages they don't have a clear R/L sound, just one sound in between.

Let's call him John for this, some people would say, "hey John, bend over" It was funny because it was so random, but it was so mean. A lot of Germans and Italians moved there after WW2 in order to escape trial for war crimes, since there was no extradition treaty. For "Cooking with Poo" I'd guess that her full name is likely "Pooja" which is actually a fairly common name in India. I'm told it means "prayer."
