I teared up in the trailer. Awkwafinas performance is surprisingly poignant. She needs to get an Academy nom for this. This is truly an A24 material.

So important for Awkwafina to get this role. Now she won’t be typecast. She’s too talented to be the zany friend in everything.

On the contrary, the unwritten rule goes: one stereotype is shattered, ten others are created in it's place. Thus, instead of playing the stereotypical Chinese kooky girl, she has become the stereotypical Chinese depressive woman, a walking Joy Luck Club. Only much more so. That's as Tao as it's gonna get.

Honestly she can be like Steve Carell. He used to get mostly cartoony goofy roles but he was able to transcend to drama roles.

The film is meaningful in so many ways. Cried about half the film, especially when Billi hugged her Grandma at the end. Grandma finally broke down from her usual strong front.

This movie, Lulu Wang, Awkwafina, and the woman who plays the grandma should have all got Acadany Award nominations. This was probably the most nuanced, moving, subtle, honest, and amazing movie i’ve ever seen. This movie was true art. Lulu is so talented. This movie should have got oscar nominations over the other white, male, depressing or angry movies that were actually nominated!

The ending of the scene in the wedding photographer's studio was, for me, one of the most poignant and emotionally arresting moments I can recall seeing in a film recently - specifically Billi's facial reaction when Na Nai tells her "When you get married, I'll throw you an even bigger wedding." Super acting on the part of Awkwafina.

Great trailer. I teared up as well. As for value. I love watching Asian cinema. China has GREAT actors. These days while Hollywood is churning out gunk, I'd rather watch subtitled films than watch even the "A-listers" are acting in, truthfully. Less bad language and sex - more drama.

As much as I enjoy the chats with cast and director on this movie, I fear that the cracks in the traditional support structure for parents and grandparents in Asia may be all too real in 2019, Its sad to see the way older people have been allowed to fall through the cracks in many developed economies, but particularly so in countries like Singapore, HK and South Korea. I was stunned to see a documentary on the homeless in Singapore - one of the richest countries on earth - and especially when it showed older Singaporeans who had worked their entire lives forced to find somewhere to sleep at night. Completely unthinkable when you realise just how much money Singapore spends on public housing. We have a homeless problem here in Australia - growing larger each year - but for someone who has only visited Singapore as a tourist it seems like the most sanitised, state-sponsored place on earth (far more so than mainland China, IMO). Fortunately, there are people who care and I hope they can overcome something we've started to accept as a fact of life in far too many 'rich' countries. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYm5poaQqseBaac kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2Waf4hqd5WMmdE The very idea of spending weeknights on the streets because your HDB flat is too far from your workplace seems absurd, but I guess there are different versions of 'homeless' in a country with Singapore's incredible work ethic. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2rNqpmAetOAatU (FWIW, there are worse places to be homeless than tropical Singapore - I was stunned to see homeless men huddled in a pedestrian overpass in Seoul, another city that just seems to incredibly rich from the time you get off the plane)

The translation isn't obvious. Literally, it's teacher, of course, but the usage is like Mr. or Ms. but much more respectful, while still being more generally applicable and commonly used than say Doctor or Maestro. You also have to factor in its distinction with xiansheng. There's no direct equivalent in everyday English, so I can understand her difficulty in coming up with one.
@peterkhew7414
@peterkhew7414 4 жыл бұрын
@@jalfredprufrock620 先生, or sensei is what Japanese used for teacher. Chinese use 老师, or laoshi, for teacher instead. But in both context, teacher can be used as a generic term, or as a humble honorific for a professor.
