Hearing that this movie is being heavily pursued by a host of studios and streaming services warms my heart. It deserves all the best and gives me hope for the diversity of film-making going forward. Welcome to 2019! Keep it going, Hollywood.

Finally saw Farewell yesterday. It was a strong emotional acting film. That I can sort of relate to why they did what they did. She's matriarch of the family. The two son were brilliant. I can't wait to see what Ms Wang next project.

Lost my sister at 44 to colon cancer. I believe she lived up to the Dr.s telling her she had three months to live. She did just that almost to the day. I took my Daughters to see it and it was so heart warming, we talk afterwards, that i do not want to know if i have a short time to live if possible. Thank You for sharing this with the world.

Just saw this movie tonight. Incredibly moving and funny at the same time. Really thought-provoking to me as someone who lost their mother to cancer. I am glad she survived, though. Cancer survival stories always give me hope. Nai-Nai was my favorite character, but I really like Billie, too.

The interviewer is offensively underdressed
@cheusingher87345 жыл бұрын
Maybe it’s a way to make the interview less serious in a way, or to lighten the atmosphere, like maybe it’s just so you don’t have feel pressured to look incredibly well dressed for this interview, as long as your energy is good, then the interview will be good. At least that’s what I think 😅.
@heycraig5 жыл бұрын
he's a well known director / celebrity and is known for the way he dresses. always shorts - usually a backwards baseball hat and a hockey jersey. so him wearing the blazer and having no hat is his version of a tuxedo.

Don't be superficial in your expectations. More important to let people express their own identity and feel comfortable in what they wear.

I was just curious about what the westerners would think, is it ridiculous to put on a brave face and hide the feelings and the fact that your family member is dying? For me, I’d do the same as the film characters, because in Chinese culture, we put family values before individuals, and if I told a family member, he or she would probably give up the last hope and just prepare to die.
@maxxu85 жыл бұрын
I don't quite understand the claim that the lying is for "family values." Maybe, it's because the director first gave people this idea. To me, the lying is supposedly for the benefit of Nainai, i.e., an individual, so that she could live her last days with less sorrow, less fear, and more hope. I don't buy this individualism vs collectivism framing for this film.

From the perspective of someone who works in healthcare in the US, it is pretty mind boggling how someone of sound mind can be kept out of the loop of their own healthcare. It's one thing when people can't make their own decisions due to cognitive issues, but with someone who still has so much life and cognition... It's a pretty foreign concept. My grandma and great aunt are getting up in years, but they're still making some decisions regarding their health and their final wishes, so I don't know.... It can be sad for our loved ones seeing their health decline, but they can also make peace with it. Some may choose they want to keep fighting and others want to live out peacefully, which is why things like Hospice exist. Even if they aren't necessarily a "fighter", I think it's possible to be aware of something without being totally consumed by it. Many people are able to make peace with the fact that their health is declining and they will die. All in all, I understand the perspective of the people who wouldn't tell the grandma, but I can't imagine that in my life.
@maxxu85 жыл бұрын
@@sunnyb2982 I think in Chinese culture people genuinely believe that we can make good decisions for others, even when against their will. Maybe this can also explain why Chinese families have so many "tiger mothers."
