Yes, and I was pretty good at it back in the day, which is why I've noticed, much to my chagrin, that we no longer seem to be all working from the same definitions anymore. I'm assuming the importance your wise teacher placed on vocabulary was probably based on her recognition that a common vocabulary allows us to learn from and reason with others more effectively. Not being red or blue myself, however, I often witness people talking past each other in arguments where they're all using the same words but seemingly different meanings for some based on differing value sets and assumptions. Not surprisingly, those arguments all seem to conclude without resolution or even any peaceful agreements as to how to proceed towards a solution. Realization of the benefits a common vocabulary can provide absolutely depends on agreement amongst ourselves as to what these words mean. As a vocabulary nut, I would like to get back to that because it helps me win arguments ;-), but as a pragmatist I have to say the divisions in our country have reached such a pitch that I have real doubts as to whether we can make it happen. Too many people I know have dug into their positions and are not interested in anything other than the complete surrender and humiliation of the other side. They're beyond defining terms because they are convinced the other side is willfully refusing to "do the right thing", which of course makes them "evil". You don't waste time negotiating with evil, so it follows that anything the other side says is automatically a self-serving lie or half truth regardless of vocabulary. Mrs. Burt, I assume again, would be very disappointed in us all.
