The show got me into the books, just read the first one about to read the second one and then the comics! I find the book extremely fun. Hope the show gets a third season! The ending of the book almost made sense until like the very very end. Don't understand what reg did in time to grow that beard, or what the big flash was at the end.

The actual books would be incredibly hard to adapt. The BBCA/Netflix show, captures the essence of Dirk Gently, in a completely new and fresh way. The show is vibrant and funky and incredibly diverse, it's broken so so many rules that 'little' tv shows have when they start out. It's great. I love the show/s and the book. (None of the shows ever really seem to be completley based on the book.)

IIRC Max Landis said that he took more inspiration from the second book "Dark Tea time of the Soul" and that are some parallels between it and the TV series as it is mapped out.

Ive actually read both, liked the 1st 1 more bit there is a v funny scene with an eagle in his house in the 2nd one, hope you get back to making videos on this channel i miss them , should have commented more

I read the books a while ago and watched the TV show and somehow was disappointed - especially by the ending! I understood the series to take place after the events in the books - but have read The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul more often than Dirk Gentley's Holistic Detective Agency. I think the books are typical for Douglas Adams writing and it is really hard to transfer what is great about that onto film.

The books, the English tv show, the radio series, the American tv show (that isn’t really Dirk Gently, but called Dirk Gently and inspired by the books)... I like them all! If I had to choose one I would say that the radio series are the best.

I haven't read the second book yet, but it seemed to me that the first one takes place after the events of the series, because Dirk already owns the agency

There was a British TV show, possibly just a pilot episode(?) in the 90s (?) or early 2000s (?) I seem to remember with Steven Mangan? It was awhile ago and my memory of it is very "sketchy" but I'm sure it's not the TV show you saw. (a failed attempt to capture some of the "magic" of The Hitchhikers Guide) :)

It's a shame Douglas Adams passed before finishing The Salman of Doubt, It looked to be the best of the bunch. The first book IS indeed bizarre. The Long Dark Tea-Time of the soul was pretty good though. The TV show seems so different than the book, but I like it's vibe.
