I think what separates this movie amongst other action movies is that this movie is truly an ensemble film where it's not just the main protagonist who saves everyone, but a collection of many many other people who contribute to saving others. It's not one man saves the world. It's the police chief, the detectives, endless beat cops, construction workers, and an electrician who actually helped and if it wasn't for them McClain would have failed.
@Jesses0015 ай бұрын
Now that you mention it, you are right. In the first movie McClain was out in front, but Al and his wife supported him throughout the situation. In the second, Airport police, the news crew, Al, and to a lesser degree this time his wife were his supports. This one it is the entirety of the NYPD, the FBI were at least a little helpful this time, Zeus, and many others.

40:41, I think this Die Hard movie had some of the best supporting characters in the other NYC policeman. They weren't sitting around waiting for McClane to save the day by himself. Of all of them were doing everything they could, Charlie here is my favorite. He is a chubby balding guy with bad social skills. But in the moment of truth, he stood his post to try to defuse the bomb so children wouldn't get hurt. Sometimes the most heroic people are the most unlikely.

@marcwesterink77425 ай бұрын
You can fill both jugs in such a way and hold them diagonally. The water should edge on one side at the bottom and one side at the top, just let the excess water pour out That would give you 2,5 gallons and 1,5 gallons respectively. Add the 1,5 gallons to the 2,5 gallons and you have 4 gallons. I think that's the shortest route.

The legend goes that when this movie was released, the FBI questioned the writer & director because they realized the villain's plot could actually work for real. As a result, the FBI worked with the Federal Reserve Bank in New York and the NYPD to formulate a response in the event someone used terrorism to distract the police and rob the reserve.
@stefantsarev44425 ай бұрын
Fun fact about the movie: the writer really did his homework with the Reserve heist. In fact, he did it so well that he had a little chat with the FBI. I've actually seen this puzzle used during interviews for QA positions (it's too simple for most software engineers -- they get other challenges). I mean, it's not actually *hard* but it does take an modicum of logical problem-solving to work through -- or at least a good memory of how they did it in the movie. 😀 Applicants who *can* solve the problem won't *necessarily* make good software testers, but those who *can't* almost certainly will *not* .

Or alternatively for the Jug Puzzle: Fill the 3g jug to the top pour entire contents into the 5g jug, refill the 3g jug and pour 2g from it to fill the 5g jug full then empty the 5g jug, pour the remaining 1g from the 3g jug into the 5g jug, refill the 3g jug again pour entire contents into the 5g jug creating exactly 4g in the 5g jug.

A trunk isn't a suitcase. It's a big rectangular box, usually with a hinged lid on top. It's used for carrying a lot of stuff while travelling, but went out of fashion when suitcases came in.

For me, this is the best Die Hard film other than the original. I love that it pulls a full reverse Uno on the previous films, both of which had McClane operating in unfamiliar territory, going it alone with active resistance from everybody in authority. This one, by contrast, gives him home ground advantage (the thing with the ambulances, etc.), and his boss and his colleagues all have his back, actively listening to him and taking his intel seriously. Other things I love are that three Wall Street guys (the one in the cab, the one with the snacks watching the train station cleanup with his co-workers from the office window, and the "Heavens to Betsy" guy) are all different actors, but are all cast and costumed to look identical to one another (balding, wearing the same kind of glasses, etc.), the "Pulp Fiction" reference ("smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo"), the little musical sting of "Singin' in the Rain" as McClane is surfing the dump-truck through the aqueduct. Also, the actor who plays Katya, Simon's knife-wielding psycho girlfriend, who moves with that languid, predatory gait, is the musician Sam Phillips, who wrote the music for "Gilmore Girls" and "The Marvellous Mrs Maisel".

3 gallons + 5 gallons = 8 gallons. 8/2 = 4 gallons. Fill half of bottle 1 (3/2=1.5 gallons). Fill half of bottle 2 (5/2=2.5 gallons). Pour all the water from bottle 1 into bottle 2 and you get 1.5 gallons + 2.5 gallons = 4 gallons (in bottle 2).
@Dante945 ай бұрын
It has to be exact so you can't rely on filling it halfway. You fill 3 gal. Pour it into 5 gal. Fill 3 gal again fill up rest of 5 gal. That leaves 1 gal. of water left in 3 gal. bottle. Empty 5 gal. pour in leftover 1 gal. Then full 3 gal again and add it to the 1 gallon in other bottle. Voila exactly 4 gallons

This is the funniest one. It was originally a script titled 'Simon Says' that had nothing to do with John McClain.
@JeffKelly035 ай бұрын
Yep. It was a completely original script, not part of an existing IP. So when they were shoppig it around, it was briefly going to be a new Lethal Weapon movie (which obviously makes sense, with the wildcard white cop and the Black partner who's getting too old for this shit), before eventually becoming a Die Hard film.
@JeshuaSquirrel5 ай бұрын
That happens a lot in movies. Saw 2 was originally a script titled "The Desperate". When it was shopped around, James Wan figured it would be a great Saw movie so he adapted it.

Die Hard 2 *also* started out as a standalone film, but then was revised to become a Die Hard sequel. Interestingly enough, the original Die Hard actually originated as a sequel to a Frank Sinatra film called "The Detective"... they revised it to being a standalone film, but contractually had to offer the role to Sinatra, who politely declined as he was quite up in age by that point. So, yeah, the first Die Hard had its roots in being a sequel, whereas its first two sequels did not start life as sequels. The less said about the final two Die Hard sequels, the better.

Another great reaction, Ashleigh! My favorite Die Hard by far. This one holds a special place for me mainly due to the setting. As a native New Yorker, I love recognizing all of the locations. The French name on the bottom of the aspirin bottle is the same name as the name flashing on the red sign at the end (across the French-Canadian border). That is how McClain figured out where the gold had been stored and that Simon would be returning there.

Hey, Ms. Ashleigh. I liked how this wasn't set during the Christmas season but still managed to reference it. There were two different endings filmed for this. I'm glad they chose this one. You've got to get one of those elephant joke books. They've been around at least 50 years. The 4 gal water bottle trick had me stumped for most of the movie. Did have two solutions before I left the theater. I thought Jerry was a great guest star. History nerds unite.
