The thing about Gary Oldman is you could be just living your life and then suddenly the director yells cut and it turns out you're not you. You're a character played by Gary Oldman. He's that damn good.

' I don't think I know Gary" Oh you've seen Gary Oldman several times on the channel. He plays Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movies, Comissioner Jim Gordon in the Batman/Dark Knight movies, and Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg in the Fith Element. Of course he looks so different in every role he plays it's often very hard to differentiate one role from another. He's a literal master of disguise. Gary also played Dracula in "Bram Stoker's Dracula1' from 1992 directed by Francis Ford Coppla (the same guy who directed The Godfather), the movie is fairly decent, but if you're gonna get into Dracula i recommend starting with the old black and white movie from 1931 with Bela Lugosi.

Gary Oldman the led terrorist was in “The Fifth Element” casted as Zorg, the arms dealer who brokers the deal with Mr. Shadow that almost allows evil to triumph. Gary is at his best when he is evil’s right hand man. Ashleigh, you have to show “Bridge of Spies” soon. Tom Hanks is great as the crusader lawyer defending the most hated man in the free world.

Zorg in The fifth Element, you didn't like that movie, but he's also been in incredible films like Leon, the professional, Sirius Black in Harry Potter, he played Dracula, he was commissioner Gordon in the Batman trilogy, he is one of the greatest character actors of all time. Absolutely legendary, it took me years to learn his name because he just blends in so well.

One thing you didn't notice, perhaps because it's been so long since you watched it, is that Air Force One is one of many action/thrillers that were pretty obviously modeled on Die Hard -- some sort of incident in an enclosed space with one guy trying to secretly work their way through the villains to defeat the big bad. Hopefully that inspires you to return to the Die Hard movies so we can get to Die Hard With a Vengeance, which is maybe the best one.

I got a dvd of this movie from the discount bin at Walmart many years ago. Didn't have high expectations for this movie. IIRC it didn't do THAT well in the boxoffice. So I put it on and it wowed me. BTW I mentioned this movie to a coworker who had recently served as a soldier. When I told him that Harrison Ford as the President is playing cat and mouse with terrorists on Air Force One he said to me Well that's unbelievable. I told him well they explain that he was a Medal Of Honor Winner. And my coworker then says Oh then THAT's possible because you don't get that medal unless you are a badass.

Fun facts. Air Force One is the radio call sign of any fixed wing aircraft the President is on. Helicopters are called Marine One. So, in this case, the instant the President broke free of the 747 it was no longer Air Force One. When he came aboard the rescue plane, it became Air Force One. Air Force One did not crash.

I had an idea for another movie to react to for the Fourth of July. I'd highly recommend reacting to the 2004 animated action comedy movie Team America: World Police for it's 20th anniversary, if that's OKay? It's written and directed by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of South Park, which means the movie is outrageous and absolutely hilarious. It's great because it makes fun of American action movies, American militarism, the foreign policy of the United States at the time, people's reactions to America, and America's standing in the world. It's a really smart movie that way. It's also one of the most impressive movies ever made on a technical scale. There are no humans. It's all Marrionette puppets. Every character in the movie is a puppet, and everything is animated that way. It's one of the funniest movies ever and I think it'd make for a really fun reaction 🙂

It's always good to rewatch Gary Oldman in just about anything. I really do love his truly unhinged performances. I love when he is given an absolute madman and goes exactly as over-the-top as his role demands. I think that EEEEEEEEVVVVVVERRYYYYYOOOOONE agrees that he's an iconic master of dialing up to 11. That being said, I think my favourite thing he's done in recent years is Jim Gordon-first Lieutenant, later Commissioner Gordon-in the Christopher Nolan Batman films. He knows, always, what the role demands, and what will make the film a better movie. It's such a joy to see him restrained, muted, relying on the subtlety of his acting skill to give us a very rich everyman to the operatic gods flying around the screen in huge swooping movements. It's a masterclass in balancing a picture. He's so perfect opposite Heath Ledger precisely BECAUSE he doesn't go "full Joker" while Heath is doing the same thing. He's certainly capable. If you've seen The Professional, or Fifth Element, or Immortal Beloved, or even Sid & Nancy, he has a box of fireworks in his acting trunk and like children, we delight when he pulls it out. But what a fine craftsman we have in Oldman. It's a pleasure to see him in arthouse films, in tense dramas, in cartoony superhero films. I would dearly love to see him in a broad comedy, because I bet he'd be hilarious. And he's good here, too. However good or bad this film would have been without him, it's one step better because he's there. It always is.

MiGs. Almost all Russian fighters are designated as MiG's (except for the Sukhoi's). The MiG is an abbreviation of Mikoyen, the company that produced them. The first was, appropriately, the MiG 1...a prop driven fighter sent out in 1940. MiG 1 through 5 were used in WWII, and the MiG 9 was the first operational Russian jet. The most famous MiG fighter and most produced was the MiG 15, which faced off against the American Sabre jets in the Korean war. The most common MiG currently flying is probably the MiG 35, an aircraft comparable to the F15. However the best Russian fighters presently are Su-34's and Su-35's, from the Sukhoi production line. They're currently being used in the Ukraine conflict.
