Funny fact: Sarah Michelle Gellar was in a dinner (or event) sitting next to Kiefer Sutherland. He asked her what she was working on and she said “a series called Buffy, the Vampire Slayer”. Yes, Joss Whedon pretty much HATES this one. The director took the film away from him, wanted it to be nothing but a comedy, and Donald Sutherland changed all his lines. Given how little Joss liked what was done to his script, when Fox offered him the opportunity to do the series, it was merely as a courtesy. They never expected him to take them up on it, but he wanted to do it right. The mole was Joss's idea. So was the PMS, but the film showed him this was a bad mistake and it was discarded in favor of a general "vampire-sense" for the show. A few resonances in the series, so it's fun to see them. Pike killing Benny is like Xander slaying Jesse. The bit with Grueller is sort of referenced when Buffy and Xander have their convo in the tunnels. And of course everything Buffy goes through here (her friends are awful, but it still sucks that they die) is background for her bitter "Prepare me!" speech in the series premiere. (And her initial reluctance to open up to Giles is colored by her memories of Merrick's death, of course.) The best part of the movie script isn't in the film, of course. Allow me to quote: ******************************** LOTHOS It doesn't really matter. The names, the faces, they all melt together. After a time, there really is no difference. One more pathetic bitch, begging for me to suck on her clotted heart. MERRICK This one may surprise you. CLOSEUP - THE GUN Merrick holds it firm behind his back, finger on the trigger. LOTHOS I rather doubt it, if she was raised here. He laughs. He doesn't appear to have noticed the gun, but: LOTHOS (continuing) Where is she? I can't wait to meet her. Do you think she's ready to face me? Or perhaps you can stop me with that gun. MERRICK Perhaps. Merrick looks out at the trees nearby. MERRICK'S POV Buffy appears, far away, between the trees. Merrick looks at Lothos, afraid he will notice. ANGLE - BUFFY Approaching, stopping some twenty yards away. She looks about her for a weapon. LOTHOS Look at you. You pathetic thing. So small, so full of fury. After you've served me for a hundred years, I think you'll have a little more perspective. MERRICK I don't think so. Lothos rushes suddenly at Merrick, hissing, his feet just off the ground. Merrick steps back, whips out the GUN, and SHOOTS himself without hesitation in the head. Buffy's eyes go wide. ***************************** Ah, well. So it goes. Oh, and a couple of in-jokes in the series: When Angel meets Buffy in the premiere, he says "I thought you'd be taller", referencing that Kristy Swanson is 5'9" to SMG's 5'2". When the Master meets Buffy in "Nightmares", he says "So! This is the Slayer! You're prettier than the last one.", which is perhaps an uncharitable dig at Kristy. In the internet demon episode, Moloch scans Buffy's file in the school computer system. In two different shots, two different profiles are seen: one for Buffy as a senior (as in the film) and one for her as a sophomore (as in the series). When Buffy confers with the others in the second episode to explain vampires to Willow and Xander, they make a point of saying that vampires can NOT fly, to distance the show from the film. Anyhow, you've survived. On to Season 2! (BTW, did you not recognize David Arquette or Hillary Swank? Huh.)

I realize you don't recognize them, but Luke Perry was a heartthrob from Beverly Hills 90210. Paul Rubens also in this film was better known as "Pee Wee Herman" and David Arquette was one of the repeating characters in the Scream movies, and he is the brother of Rosanna Arquette whom you saw in "The Whole 9 yards" and Patricia Arquette the starof the TV series "Medium". Also, this movie was always a parody. It came out before all the TV series like Buffy and Charmed and Supernatural. It was a Vampire movie where the killer is a High School Cheerleader. The TV series had the luxury of using what worked and leaving out what didn't.

You can safely assume that this movie is the prequel to the series. She loses a watcher, burns down a gym, has chaos happen in LA. The series ages her down a little so she can stay in high school, but is effectively what happens after this movie. The series treats the events of the movie as if they happened (loosely), and goes from there with what Whedon wanted to do originally.

This movie was never meant to be seen as a serious movie. As someone else said, it was camp. It's coming from the perspective that the 80s was peak teen movie era. Like sure from the 90s on we have had a deluge of teen dramas on TV, but no decade tops teen movies like the 80s. We also had many iconic horror series start in the late 70s/80s. So I think the concept of this film is like a coming of age John Hughes movie..but it's also horror. Also culturally, Bram Stoker's Dracula( another movie you need to watch) really revamped the Vampire genre. It was a huge hit and there are subtle allusions to that movie in this one. So basically this is a film that is a product of its time in the world 90s: a teen dramedy that was a staple of the 80s plus a lowkey send up of Bram Stokers Dracula. BTVS was never meant to be a movie taken on its surface, it relies on the viewer knowing the cultural currency of the time and knowledge of past horror tropes. I'm not trying to change your mind, just giving some added perspective

What you have to take into account is that this came out around the same time as movies like Bill and Ted and 90210 so the valley stereotypes were big. It has more of a cult following among Gen X and Millennials. Paul Reubens aka Pee Wee Herman was hilarious as Lothos' lacky. I’m not surprised you didn’t like this movie. Definitely not one of my favorites, but it was good enough to get the tv show green lit. So that’s a big plus. The reason to watch the show first is exactly what you said. Many people might not watch the show after this. I chose to watch the show and am very glad I did. The reason to watch the movie first is because it is the origin story. The movie is freshman year in LA. The dance is in the high school gym. The show picks up at the new school in the new town at the start of sophomore year. You wanted to know how she burned down a gym at her old school. Now you know. There is some good lore/back story here. You just have to sit through the rest of it to get it. Before this, all the horror movies were about the monsters killing the prom queens/cheerleaders/popular girls. The basic concept here is what if you flip the script and the blonde victim becomes the super hero monster killer.

I saw this movie in the cinema back when it first came out and it was an innovation at the time because it turned the pretty blonde victim trope back on itself. Sure, it was corny, but this was the era of corn and airheads. About six years later, I went to see a presentation from a film student about the differences between the Buffy movie and the series. One of the first things she pointed out was that Buffy and her mates were 'airheads' in the movie, while things had evolved by the series and I think she said that the series Buffy was a 'valley girl'. What I think has partly put you off is the airhead trope, which makes Buffy more like Cordelia than she is in the series. The parody thing is all the way through. It was made to be more whacky and less tongue in cheek than the series. Which is partly because Wheedon had yet to develop his style and partly because he didn't have directorial control and walked out about two thirds through filming. So, the cheesiness did increase a bit towards the end. Although, I would say that I think you're partly seeing the Buffy concept ramped up to eleven for a short movie and thinking that it's parodying 'Buffy' as you know it, but that Buffy didn't actually exist back then. Back in 1992, this was very innovative, and it made enough of an impression on me to want to watch the series when it first came out. Without Buffy, the airhead, there would never have been Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

100%. You put it much better than I did. It's a generational thing. People. Born in the 80s grew up with stuff like "airheads" and "valley girls" as a joke in all media, from movies to cartoons. We had a book series called "Sweet Valley High" of crying out loud. While its "only" 30+ years ago, you need to watch these movies from that lens. Just like with many "classic" movies. @@mage1439 This wasn't a time where the TV show spinoff of a movie had the same actors, or often exactly the same plot. TV spinoffs typically had entirely new casts and some changes to characters, taking what worked in the movie but leaving behind what didn't. These whole "alternate reality" stuff wasn't even a thing in those days, and you can't use the same lens to view them as you do today. The series was, in fact, the sequel, making many references to events that occurred in the movie. Just because the cast changes, plot points are dropped or reworked, and new characters are introduced doesn't change that.

Ashleigh is being a grumpy gus here. You really have to get into an early 90s mindset for this particular film to fully appreciate it. It's supposed to be silly, stupid, camp, over the top. This Buffy is a typical valley girl/airhead, but matures a little by the end. Also, a lot of the film's charm comes from the era specific casting.

It was never good, it's not even good camp. The show was an improvement in every possible way, even things that are supposed to be better on a movie budget like stunts and fight choreo just looked cheap and clumsy, whereas action on the show is still impresive. It's insane the amount of talent - legendary at the time and big names before they were famous - were all upstaged by Paul Reubens, without whom the whole thing would just be unwatchably boring.

If you want a more accurate version of what Joss Whedon wanted from his film script, Dark Horse Comics adapted it: “Buffy, The Vampire Slayer: The Origin”. Dark Horse Comics also continued it with “Buffy, The Vampire Slayer: Viva Las Buffy!” in between Los Angeles and Sunndydale. Pike returns (more in tune with the comics version) in the novel “Buffy, The Vampire Slayer: Sins of the Father”, which is best read after the 3rd season.

One of the ironic things about this movie is that when Anne Rice wrote _The Vampire Lestat_, the actor she had in mind to play him was Rutger Hauer, but by the time they got around to making a movie adaptation of her books, he was too old to play the role. 27:54 You’re very much right about this movie vs. the series. Schmuck that he turned out to be, Joss Whedon was at least a better writer than the people who messed with his original script - and he supposedly carried a grudge against Donald Sutherland for years about him ignoring the script and inserting his own ad-libs. Ironically, for years Joss Whedon was considered something of a feminist for turning the “damsel in distress” trope on its head to create Buffy. She’s not the first “girl power” girl, but she was a pop icon in the late 90s. Unfortunately, he turned out to be a rotten SOB in private.

Yeah, I don't know if Whedon ever learned the same lesson that Dan Harmon did, which is that what you wrote isn't always what's best for the character at that time. Sometimes the actor just gets more in tuned with the character and the writer just needs to focus on the story as a whole.

Whedon, in general, has no love for actors. He has a core group that he likes that he keeps on hiring because they take his script and stick to it. He doesn't want actor input. He doesn't want actors to adlib without permission. His mindset is that he worked really hard on the script. Why would he want a non-writer to go, "Nah, I know these characters better than you do. So, I am ignoring your words for my own." Some directors are fine with working with actors and allowing them to adlib. James Gunn loves to hear input from his cast to help him round out his characters. But some do not. And some are in the middle. Like Edgar Wright doesn't want his actors to improv because his script writing is so tight and every sentence will come into play later. But at the same time, he wants to hear from the actors on what they think about a scene and how they can make it better.

The movie is a campy comedy. It's not meant to be a serious horror movie. Joss wrote it in response to like watching the blond girl who always seemed to die first or in the dark alley. It was also a lot different before it went into production. It was a bit more like the show (in terms of comedy, action, and heart) but the studio didn't quite get it, so he was met with a bunch of road blocks/people meddling. It was always meant to be a roast on southern California culture, so you picked up on that, and the period/cramps bit was meant to tie the "Slayer" aspect to womanhood more, but again, it was 1992 so times were different and even he admitted it was a wild choice. A lot of the questionable choices came from the director (who wasn't Joss) and the studio executives butcher/cutting up/making massive changes so it become much more of a joke than what it was intended, but the original producer/joss go together to turn it into a TV show and present in the way he had envisioned it, so many of the elements of the show are there but executed properly (so, the basic storyline became the background of the show. Buffy being from L.A., getting chosen by Merrick, and a massive vampire attack during a dance that ultimately gets her kicked out of school). Fun fact, the guy in red you were talking about? Ben Affleck. And one of Buffy's friends would eventually become a winner of an Oscar (Hilary Swank). Seth Green was also in this movie who later shows up in the TV show! He played the nerd who turned the basketball player into a vampire, but he got cut.

I also said you can't judge the TV show based on the movie, but you could judge the movie based on the TV show and that's what Ashleigh did. That being said, the movie came first and wasn't a success (no surprise there), so Joss Whedon thought again and made the TV show darker, more serious, even more terrifying and I'm glad he did. I like the way the vampires turn to dust in the TV show when Buffy drives a stake through their hearts. Also Ashleigh now knows Buffy's backstory and why she was expelled from her previous school. Believe me, Ashleigh, the TV show gets even better than the first season, so I look forward to you continuing with the show after Hallowbeans and hopefully Sarah Michelle Gellar can help put this movie out of your mind for good.

I love you, and I kind of love hearing that you hated it. Other reactors have tried being polite about it but you could tell they didn't want to be offensive and you're just genuine, which makes it okay that you didn't like it. I really liked it when I was young and I actually had a mole on my chest and lived in California so I thought I might be a chosen one. Anyways, maybe I'm the chosen one!

This is the first time I've watched this since the passing of Luke Perry, Paul Reubens, and now Donald Sutherland. I can't believe they passed so close in time to one another. This is a classic 90s movie and just over-all silly and fun. Lots of throwback scenes are used here even now and quotes.

Rutger Hauer, who plays Lothos, the head vampire, one of his earlier breakout roles, was in "Blade Runner" (1982) with Harrison Ford. Once an A-list actor, then went down to direct-to-video B movies.

Clueless pretty much paved the way for what would become the late-'90s (influential). For what most of the '90s were actually like, yes, it was like in Buffy movie.

I love the honesty and blatant feelings about this one. For me, it came out when this style of films were at it's peak with the "valley girl" persona, "wait your turn" fights, and many campy movies more of a rom/com. I actually enjoyed it when it came out and for a long time since this was my teens and there were seniors in my high school just like those and just as annoying. LOL Still, it's not one for everyone and I like that you still give nice comments and praise during the movies you don't like.

She's a senior in the movie and a Sophomore in the show. Also, the lore behind the slayer is severely altered. It's not canon, it's just a connection to the movie they wrote in.

It's *_very_* soft canon. The very broad strokes -- Buffy lived in LA, her first watcher died, she burned down her highschool -- are canonical, but none of the specific details are ever established in canon and many are retconned.

The TV series was what Joss wanted it to be but when they went to make it a movie, the studio execs wanted this, so this is what we got. It’s considered canon to a point in that Merrick was her first watcher and Lothos was her first big bad. When he optioned it for a tv series, Joss presented his original plan and we got the series.
