In this series I will take you through ALL of my tools that I use in my leather work and let you know where to get your own, how to maintain them and the best techniques to get the most out of your tools.
In this episode we are looking at stitching awls, in particular the diamond stitching awl. I go over what to look for when purchasing a new awl and show you how to get your awl nice and sharp and ready for stitching.
Hope you enjoy the video.

What you are calling a “ferrule” is actually a “collet” or “chuck”. a ferrule is a piece of metal that reinforces the connection between a tool and the handle all while preventing the wood from splitting.

I've seen many videos where people talk about the tools they use. It's nice to see you bring attention to the effect of different sizes. Now to compile what size awl, needle, thread, and pricking iron I need for the look I'm going for.

By chance, soon after I started doing leatherwork I met a retired traditional cobbler and asked him just how sharp does an awl have to be? He replied - Aahhhh; so it goes about halfway through your finger before you notice.

I use awls from Goods Japan. They’re extremely sharp right out of the bag,they come in different sizes they’re easy to keep nice and sharp,and they’re inexpensive to! They work great for 0.6mm and 0.8mm size thread which are the sizes I generally use. They also have sizes that will work really well for 0.1mm thread and 1.2mm thread.

Yes, this video was extremely helpful, because the idea of grinding down an awl blade to make it smaller simply didn't occur to me. Even though I did shape the handle to a size comfortable for me... Thank you very much!

Hi! LOVE your channel! Thanks so much for making such great videos. Quick question. I am going to made a few women's belts with 8-9oz leather. Would you recommend .6mm or .8mm thread? Those are the thicknesses that I have immediately available. Also, do you think that 4mm pricking irons are good or do I need something like 3mm? Thanks so much!!!
@JHLeather

Heya Ben, good to hear you are enjoying the videos 😊 I would use th 0.6mm with the 4mm irons 👍
