A sharp and comfortable awl is essential for clean stitching on leather and makes all the difference in the final finish of your hand stitched product.
A dull awl is completely frustrating to use and can be extremely dangerous trying to force it through leather.
Working with a sharp and comfortable awl adds to the enjoyment of your leather craft so have fun with this project

Really enjoyed this, thanks for sharing. I learned some basic tool making while living in Japan, making my own hammer, chisels, planes, awl, etc. Please keep sharing your leather craft videos. Perhaps this will be my next hobby. 🙂

Thank you sir! I bought a cheap skiving knife online and was wondering why this is so difficult. I sharpend it for about an hour and cuts like butter. The marker trick is great. Now my wallet wont have to have edges 1cm thick. You should see this thing, you would laugh. Thanks keep up the great work. I will order a knife from you in the future.

Very nice! What brand leathercraft tools do you recommend for someone getting started?
@deankay4434

I would only be guessing, but I would assume you drilled a hole in the end first, then drove the awl blank into it. A little grinding to shape then finish on the paper. Wood burning is a nice touch, but turning wood completely black, use vinegar and fine steel wool in a glass jar for a week. Once the steel wool is gone, place you wood in it or brush it on. It may take two applications but dries to a black finish. Just a different method, Blessings!

This is so random but every time I hear SA accent it starts out sounding Australian, then I’m questioning kiwi, before I can finally identify it lol

I'm an Aussie born in South Africa. His accent to me, definitely seems to have a very slight kiwi influence here and there, but the SA is unmistakable!

Terrick, Thank you so much for all of your time spent making your videos so informative. One quick question regarding the awl blade that I am confused with. Some people say that you should snip the very tip of the awl blade. Some say that you shouldn't. Can I ask your opinion on this? Do you snip the very tip on your awls before sharpening? Look forward to your reply. Regards Rahul.
@CHARTERMADE
@CHARTERMADE 5 жыл бұрын
I just responded to your email. Im not sure what snip the tip means but the front of my awl is more rugby ball shaped and less pointy

@@CHARTERMADE Thank you so much for your reply, I will reply shortly. By snip I mean do you get the very tip to make it less pointy. From your reply I believe this is the case.

when you burnt the wood and then you used danish oil. after that did you polish again? Burning wood -does it make waterproof or for other reason?. I saw Japanese carpenters burn the wood and installed on the wall and I thought to protect it from rotting and insects. what is the ideal size of the awl length and diameter of the awl handle(max diameter)? Thanks

Thanks for that. I'm curious about the big fat jaws you've fitted to the saddler's clamps. Is that your own design for some purpose? Would you change the jaws' shape any differently if doing them again? Thanks

Great video ! Just a silly question as I am a novice ... what grit sand papers did you use? You started with 360, and ended with 1200, what were the sand papers you used in between? And can I sharpen the blades without removing the awl blade from the wooden holder... I am not that confident in removing it and placing it back 🙄
@CHARTERMADE
@CHARTERMADE 5 жыл бұрын
You can absolutely sharpen your blade without removing it from the wooden holder. Im not certain that I did use an inbetween grit for this...but you certainly can if you feel it necessary. 😊

My thoughts on the editing. We need to see what's going on more than your face. If you look at the work and not at the camera, the camera should be looking at the work too. Sorry but the focus is not good either. I don't nitpick on these things usually but honestly it was too much for me to handle.
