And the Bee Gees have explained that they consider themselves R&B and even Bluegrass and that's the direction they wanted to pursue. Otis Redding was one of their greatest influences. But their record company stopped them saying they couldn't make it in that niche. Well, they've made it now for 50 years with people from every sector newly discovering and loving them. Personally glad I got on the bus in the early 70's and have enjoyed them since.

This is the most perfect love song ever and this was from 1978. And they wrote the music, the poetry of their lyrics, the arrangements for the orchestra and then they sing it. And they did this for all the songs they recorded or sang and also wrote songs for other artists like Ceiine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Dione Warwick, and a lot more. All this with no formal music or voice training. No auto tune here. All the harmonizing is natural and not forced and it is all their voices. No one sounded like them or will ever sound like them again. They were the whole package. Listen to their song "Alone" which was done in the late 90s and please pay attention to the video that it goes with that shows some of their old home movies growing up together in Australia and when they first returned to England to get into the recording industry. And Barry is the only one left after Maurice and Robin have both died and now he is alone but recording with Maurice's daughter and his own son and touring. Reply

As a teenager raised in Sydney in the 1960’s I knew of the BeeGees they were on television a lot. They were Aussie musical hero’s already. By the ‘70’s they were leading my crazy London and NY dance club life of disco. By the ‘80’s they were writing for serious artists like Diana Ross Barbara Streisand and Dionne Warwick- then they moved into serious resonating ballads in the ‘90’s. There’s no question there’s one group only who were the soundtrack to my life. To many of our lives. It wasn’t the Beatles. It was the Bee Gees. They are gods of musicality

Complete bollocks about writing it for UNICEF. This song came out in 1975. In 1978 the Bee Gees announced that they would donate the proceeds of their next single to UNICEF. That song was Too Much Heaven. It wasn't written for UNICEF, but simply a song for their album, Spirits Having Flown. They wrote it when they were bored during a lull in filming Sgt Pepper's. At least try to get one bloody fact correct so that you look less like a dishonest wanker.

Dear Pat! The Bee Gees Are extraordinary!!! The Lead singer is Barry. His chest voice is lower, but he does most of the falsettos. Robin is usually in the middle. I don’t know what to say about him except for that he has the most unusual, mellow voice, and has the most amazing vibrato on earth! Maurice( believe it or not) is my favorite. He is sooo freakin handsome, the sharpest dresser, he’s hilarious. He actually arranges all of the music, because he can hear every note, and knows where it goes. He often sings the falsettos that you think are Barry. He plays every instrument possible. Without Maurice...there would be no Bee Gees!❤❤❤

Their approach to songwriting was unique ...they first composed all the music & then the lyrics were written, without changing any of the music. Maurice [pronouced:"Morris"]/Mo was the musical & harmonic genius; Barry was main lyricist & lead singer; & Robin also sang lead, with his one-of-a-kind voice. The BeeGees had an almost 50-year career & were only stopped by Mo's tragic & totally unnecessary death.

I heard a quote from a recording technician, he said Barry wanted to add something to a recording, from out of his head, but hadn't rehearsed it beforehand. He went in and did the track, just as he wanted it, they asked for a few more takes, and he did them all exactly the same way, note perfect. When the tracks were all put together, it worked beautifully without adjustments. I may not have this exactly right, there are interviews on you-tube and a documentary on this.

It's like they invented harmony. Live band, no auto tune, no computerized voice enhancement and one mic for all three of them. Back then (1979). singing was just pure, raw talent. By the date of this recording, the BeeGees had already been singing together professionally for 21 years when Barry was 12 years old and the twins were just 9. All of the Gibb brothers including little brother, Andy, could sing in that amazing falsetto voice. But Barry was the master. He was able to exorcise more control over it. The Gibbs were, in my opinion, the most multi-talented families in music history. They wrote their own songs as well as writing songs for many other musical greats. This song was included on a compilation album to benefit UNICEF. There were many artists who recorded songs on the album, but the BeeGees gave all the royalties from this song in any form. In, at that time, an unprecedented move, they also gave UNICEF the publishing rights to Too Much Heaven. To date, Too Much Heaven has raised over 11 million dollars for UNICEF. In 1967, they wrote a song called To Love Somebody which appeared on their third album titled BeeGees 1st, but their first internationally, as the first two albums were only released in Australia. BeeGees 1st was released in July '67. Otis Redding was set to record To Love Somebody on his next album. Sadly, Otis was killed in a plane crash, Dec 10,1967. I thought for the longest time that they didn't record it themselves until after the death of Otis Redding. Their brother Andy Gibb had a very successful solo career as well until his death on March 10,1988. Just 5 days after turning 30. Andy had developed myocarditis, inflammation of the heart, which was brought on by a viral infection While most people recover from myocarditis, Andy's body was unable to fight the infection due to his history of drug use. Soo sad! The 1st time I heard this song, I was 15 years old. I was sitting on the floor in our living room. They sang with so much emotion that I had tears running down my face. It didn't hurt that before this I found out that Barry and I shared the same birthday, me in 1963 and him in 1946. While I was crying, my daddy came in and told me to knock it off or he'd change the channel. He was mean.
