I guarantee you that Elvis was not racist in any way shape or form. In 1970 he went to play the Astrodome in Houston. He was approached by the managers who suggested to him that he leave his three black girls, the Sweet Inspirations, out of his show. Without a second of hesitation, Elvis said, "If my ladies don't sing, I don't sing." He didn't let it go there. After he performed, WITH the Sweet Inspirations, he loaded them into a Jeep and had someone drive them around the inside of the stadium as they waved at the crowd with Elvis's arms around their shoulders. The Polk Salad Annie performance is from a documentary movie called That's The Way It Is, filmed at Las Vegas in August of 1970. Personally, I think they cluttered up the movie with too much unnecessary crap instead of concentrating on Elvis and his performances, but the stage show was fantastic. Unfortunately, the producers were trying to sell sex instead of artistry, so some of the best and most serious performances were cut out of the movie. By the time the second documentary, Elvis on Tour, was released in 1972, Elvis was still good, but you could tell that the constant touring was starting to affect the quality of his shows. His costumes became far more glitzy and he did not seem as light-hearted and relaxed as in 1970. His face began to have the tired look that was evident in the 1973 Aloha performances. But I am rambling.

It wasn’t a concert in the movie when he sang “If I Can Dream,” that was a TV special, the 68 comeback special. It was his first time on stage in 10 years because from 58-60 he was in the army and from 60-68 he was in Hollywood making movies. Now, this song is a concert. I love your reactions and I love how you respect your audience by not stopping it a 100X or by talking over him. Good job! Elvis is one of the most underrated music producers in music history.

Love your reaction. I saw Elvis Presley in concert on July 20, 1975 in Norfolk Scope Colosseum. I was 18 years old. It was the most amazing concert I have ever been to and I’ve been to several. From the moment he walked out the audience went out of their minds crazy and pretty much stayed that way. My favorite song that day was The Wonder of You. He hit that last note and I thought the Colosseum was going to crumble. What a performer he was!! He sold out that concert so quick he added a night concert which sold out also.

Polk Salad Annie was a favorite for Elvis to perform live. He never cut a studio records it but his live performance recording did very well on the charts. It was originally written and performed by Tony Joe White who hit #8 on the charts with it.

I still can't get over how realistic the Elvis movie was. Baz knocked it out of the park with attention to detail. It was all based off of real accounts and storyline. Austin better win the Oscar for his incredible performance as Elvis.

The greatest life performance shows I have seen were from Elvis and Tina Turner. I don't know if anybody else comes close. There were many great performers but very few that were the whole package.

I am loving how so many new people are coming to see and realise Elvis is one of the best performers and was an amazing singer and oozed charisma there are only a few people who have it and he had it in buckets. He performed as he felt it not like nowadays where performances are over choreographing their shows. Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqOpdKyEgtuNjc0). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

Elvis started taking drugs in the army to stay awake in the field (Amphetamines) they were given to him by the army. The government did that in those days. He loved them so much he later used them to tour. Then he had to come down to sleep so he took sleeping pills. Nobody got or made Elvis take prescription drugs, Elvis loved pills and when he was young it was fun and he could handle it. As he got older he was hooked, he overdosed and was put in a coma many times. It’s very sad, 9 year old Lisa lost her daddy and the world lost the greatest entertainer the worlds ever known, the first real rockstar. 👑

“Colonel” Parker was an evil man. Elvis was worked to death. Plain and simple. His drug use started in the freezing cold weather of Germany. Doing guard duty. Overnight. If you fell asleep you’d be dead. He came home to a manager with a DEMONIC gambling problem. And since PARKER couldn’t leave the US, he wouldn’t allow Elvis to either. Fans from every corner of the world. I dare-say that Asians did and still love and revere him next to the USA. Thanks for this reaction ❤️

Pat, you have reacted to many of my favorite Elvis songs but I have one I haven’t seen requested. From the movie King Creole there are three songs which you will like because again shows a different side of Elvis. The first is the intro clip Crawfish , second Trouble, 3rd King Creole. This was Elvis 4th movie and he was given an extension from the Army so he could finish the movie before reporting to boot camp for basic training.
