This reminds me of a story my Godfather told me about my dad. In the 1960s, my Dad was a Lt. Jg. in the US Navy. Being fluent in both French and Italian, he was brought in to translate the dinner menus for a big dinner that the American Admirals were throwing for their French and Italian counterparts at SACLANT (Supreme Allied Command, Atlantic Fleet). So, my dad's getting his food, and a woman her mid 50s means to ask him if he was Regular Navy or a Reservist. However, she worded the question, "Excuse me Lieutenant, are you regular?" My father, not knowing who she was replied, "Yes, ma'am. Every morning at zero seven hundred." She storms off in a huff. A few minutes later, an a Vice Admiral comes up to him, pokes him in the chest and yells, "SMITH! PRETEND I'M YELLING AT YOU!" My rather replied, "Uh...Admiral...I don't have to pretend...you are." The admiral says, "YEAH, BUT I'M not MAD AT YOU!" I JUST WANT MY WIFE TO THINK I AM."
