The best idea, is to get your refractive state, to change from -0.75 Diopters, to +0.25 Diopters, in about one year. That is from 20/50, to 20/20, during the school years. I measure my refraction with a Snellen, and a Test Lenses. It is not easy, but it is possible.

It is impossible to measure a length.

You are right - it is impossible to measure length directly. I think to measure directly, we would literally have to take the whole eye out and measure it with a rule from there -_- With the IOL Master, we're able to measure the axial length 'indirectly' It's the best we have nowadays! Good news is the technology is getting better and better; so maybe one day :)
