The axial skeleton is a part of the human skeleton that includes the bones along the central axis of the body. It consists of 80 bones and is divided into three main regions:
1. Skull:
The skull is composed of 22 bones (8 cranial and 14 facial bones). It protects the brain and forms the structure of the face.
2. Vertebral Column (Spine):
The vertebral column consists of 33 vertebrae, which are divided into five regions:
Cervical (7 vertebrae)
Thoracic (12 vertebrae)
Lumbar (5 vertebrae)
Sacral (5 fused vertebrae)
Coccygeal (4 fused vertebrae)
3. Thoracic Cage (Rib Cage):
The thoracic cage includes 24 ribs (12 pairs) and the sternum. The ribs are divided into:
True ribs (first 7 pairs)
False ribs (next 3 pairs)
Floating ribs (last 2 pairs)
4. Neck Bone 01 Hyoid bone
5. chest Bone 01 Sternum
6. Ear Ossicles 06 bones 3 in each ear
Malleus Incus Stapes
The axial skeleton provides support and protection for the brain, spinal cord, and vital organs within the thorax. It also serves as an attachment point for muscles, facilitating movement and maintaining posture.
