Europe was the A&A board game I ever owned. Series was introduced to me by my high school history teacher. Good memories playing this game, vanilla and pacific.

My only tournament win, two games only and both were called by board positions and $$. I'd never seen it before, my first game I'm Germany and retreated from 2 of my 3 eastern front turn 1 attacks, I felt embarrassed doing so as I seen my opponents surprised look too. Kept building infantry for 3 or 4 turns, I was able to march east with a relative immunity from counterattacks, no allied landings in France. My second game as allies I had a very aggressive German opponent, I built infantry all but the last turn, he attacked me constantly, but never had enough infantry for the victory, but I did get one big attack on his pile and he had to pull back some survivors, meanwhile I landed in France and was gonna keep coming, game was called just after the German retreat. I've often found whoever builds the most infantry has the better flexibility after 8-10 turns (some games/houserule combinations)

I got a question, is your d day game in HBG already finished? I would like to buy it when I am able to do so. I would also appreciate if you tell us all the units necessary to play so that it is easier to buy.
@TheHilltopPillbox2 ай бұрын
@@LobsterStrategyBros Thanks for asking! We are in the final stages of development. The rules are done, which is the toughest part of any game, and the map is getting a last-minute work-up. As far as the units needed, I tried to keep it very accessible for the average player. For the Allies, you should have all you need, with no extra purchases necessary, unless you want to buy the fancy tanks, medics, and engineer units, but that shouldn't set you back far. The Germans have a new unit called the Nebelwerfer, as well as the Goliath. Both are available at HBG, and there aren't too many needed. There is a need for a lot of German infantry, though. But, as I will point out in my videos, you can certainly cheat that aspect of the game, and there will be a number available shortly after the first round. The original setup calls for 90, but there are some in places that will not be attacked for a long time, maybe never, so you can probably put that number down to 50, or so, and still be okay. While they are scattered a bit in the setup, they do clump together, so you can chip them out. There are nine bunkers, six radar stations, and six flak batteries needed, but you can cheat those, too. There are 6 minefields, but those are done in the abstract, so no need for a purchase. There are also 3 Railway Guns and 3 Coastal Batteries, but that's easy to get or substitute. It is possible, also, to use a dry-erase marker on the board to denote some of the static facilities and units. Just wipe it off after it is destroyed! No extra aircraft needed, and you should definitely have enough to populate the board. The only thing that people may want to purchase, although it is not necessary, are the Canadian units. I figure most will just use UK units until they purchase the Canucks. I hope that helps!

Currently part of a wider project regarding this edition in particular. If you don't mind me asking what house rules are you using to make it so Allies win? Germany is more or less unstoppable in this edition as long as you play a specific way and that's been more or less known since 1999. NOTE/explanation: It's not about buying 100% TANKs with Germany from the word go. It's about buying 100% INF and then cutting over to TANK for *only* 1-2 turns starting at roughly turn 2-3, then snapping back to 100% INF to defend against whatever the Allies are cooking up.
@TheHilltopPillbox2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I don't really employ house rules, but we just found that with the UK sending fighters over, and once the subs are gone, sending tanks and artillery over, the Germans find it tough to handle the onslaught. The US would usually end up in Italy with a decent stack by Turn 5, and start chewing up the German economy. Yes, I only mentioned the tank stack because that was a real temptation early on for many players, as they might no realize that they defend at a 2. Your strategy does work well, and I have done that, as well as having been on the receiving end of it. This particular game was rather close, and a couple more hits by the Soviets in the first round would likely have ended in an Allied win.

Interesting how you say the Allies usually win because I have played 3 games of this and the Axis have won every time.
@TheHilltopPillbox2 ай бұрын
Yeah, I had a suspicion that the Axis would win this one, right after I said the Allies usually do...oh well, those dice can be crazy!

How many editions do you have, I see you playing like dozens of different games, I only have the a&a 1942, planning on next getting a&a global or a&a 1914, depending on if I get the funds for a&a global, do you recommend it or is there a better alternative like global war 1936. Would love to see a comparison video between them
@LobsterStrategyBros2 ай бұрын
Never played global 1936 but I like both axis and allies 1914 and 1940. Its nice to change between both wars
@TheHilltopPillbox2 ай бұрын
I was actually thinking about doing a comparison of the A&A games and their GW counterparts. There are similarities and differences, and only so much time! I have all the A&A varieties except the 1941 game, which I had, but gave away. Not much fun for serious players, in my opinion. The GW series of games are meant for a deeper dive than A&A. Politics and economics are more crucial for victory, and the dice seem to have a bit less of an overall impact, since they are d12, and you throw a LOT more of them!
