Hey Guys, Well, here is a rather small project that came into the shop. We are welding new spring perch hangers onto this rig style axle housing. Neat little project. Learning about Dual shield wire as well. Thanks for the support so kick back and enjoy.

Hobart makes a really good dual shield. I've run pallets of that wire. It'll even weld on scuzzy metal you're not too sure of. Really good properties can even do some impromptu hard facing with it if you peen on it a bit when it's still warm. Lays in nice and smooth and flux peels off like 7018 with the right settings. Can uphill and overhead with it no problemo. Listening to your weld if you bumped .2-.5 volts it'll stop spitting BBs and the end of your wire won't form a bead, never need to trim the end with welpers. I always ran straight stringers pushing slightly.

I ran 2 or nearly 2 dual shield spools a week for a few years... you gotta play with the setting, it looked a little hot from the dark flux color... the sound was off not ssssss sizzle or the glopy cooking sound when the wire speed is a little slow... but all welding machines aren't the same and there's different settings for power and wire speeds for different requirements... the hotter it's ran the more strength it has but becomes more brittle. from my experience, when you get it dialed in the you'll get slag peal and no need to chip anything. I used a little air from the air chisel exhaust it would blow it away and would be ready for the next pass. I did mostly 1/2 to 1 in. structural with it and the occasional low hydrogen process on some applications. it's fantastic stuff.

Man thats the same stuff I used, it penetrates better than anything else. Miller Xmt or 252/251p? at 24 volts and 320 inches per minute or 21v and 240(?) would easily weld some 1inch blocks onto an auger that was as tall as an underpass on the freeway. Good for Kelly bars and 2inch or 4 inch(?)pile driver gussets too! Just 1 root pass and 3 more passes on top = strong. Even in the wind it's great!

I dont understand why it's not used more in industrial and outdoor settings. Even in a windy environment it welds so well with fewer stops and starts than stick. There are certainly times when stick has an advantage but overall I'd weld dual shield over about any other process whenever I could.

Love the welds for what the dual shield does. I also have trouble seeing welds and I modified a light. I have one of those halogen work lights on a tripod stand with the rectangular fixture. Halogen bulbs don't last long and the heat they produce is next to welding. I purchased a pair of rectangular LED COB lights, yellow looking built on a white, flat circuit boars (amazon and other places sell them) and because it is Circuitry On Board, you only attach the positive and negative leads directly from a 110 outlet with solder. They are available in different output and the light produced by the finished unit is next to a cloudless day in the summer. I removed the halogen bulb and replaced it with the 2 LED COB lights. I used a piece of aluminum sheet (steel could also be used and aluminum is what I had available) to mount the LEDs with small screws and nuts and then attached it to the fixture. I was not able to use the reflector but with some mods it should be possible and when done, it was unnecessary. The LEDs do not make much heat and I can now see the weld. The LEDs produce a much better light than do the halogens. Look for at least 100W and if higher, go for it. Price might be ten bucks each. They last a long time and be sure to check if the ones you look at are 1110 or 240 volt so you do not get the wrong ones. This is an easy project.

I have a light above my head and it seems to reflect down inside the mask and it's hard to see. So I made up a little hood piece that hangs over the back of my head to block the light. I seen other people use them so I'm going to give it a shot next time I do some welding and see how it goes. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦

I use dual shield for everything at work, the welds are super smooth and burn in like no other. Should you be using c25 ramp it up to c10, the c10 requires less energy to achieve spray transfer and/or pulsed spray. The more argon the easier it is to enter spray transfer. Basically itll run as hot as c25 but with less voltage.

The old ones broke on the bridge, then got out my wood burning soldering iron with a blade attachment. Stuck the frame on both sides of the blade till it melted and then stuck then together. The same way poly pipe is fused, then used the hot blade to smooth out the area. So far they are holding. So now I'm at 2.75 + magnification with the new prescription. The old ones are at 2.50
