amazes me the amount of trade people who need a respirator/mask and don't bother with one. my late uncle in law ( a builder) died due to not having adequately protected himself over a lifetime of dusty building sites. good to see you take care of yourself, does look like a riot mask ;) atb mate Rob

Sorry about your uncle in law Rob - the trouble is we all say it won't happen to me, and its to late when it starts going pear shape. It does looks a bit strange strange and I was tempted to do the Darth Vader music thing but didn't want to get told off by KZbin Lol Thanks for watching ATB Mike #StayCornish 😬

Glad to see all you knifemakers taking your respiratory health seriously. The powered respirators whilst expensive have significant advantages over negative pressure orinasal designs. 3M also make a modular powered design also. Take care with the filters, there are many cheaper fakes around on the net. ATB. Bill

Thanks for the heads up about the fakes Bill - I did look at the M3 stuff and they were good units but the filters were quite expensive for almost the same thing. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. ATB Mike #StayCornish 😬

Never mind cheap fake filters...I was sold this as suitable for hardwoods and MDF, then learnt it is the very lowest category of 'TH' (turbo hood) respiratory protection. It DOES NOT meet the level HSE cites is necessary for working with hardwoods, let alone MDF. This is TH1P, Trend Airshield is TH2P, 3M Versaflo is TH3P. People need to decide what's right for them; I know FAR TOO MANY woodturners who have bought this believing it offers higher protection than it does. The dust which does you the real harm (and is carcinogenic) is not visible with the naked eye, so not something you can judge by the fact you 'feel' it's working well. Fine for TH1P applications, but not where a higher level of respiratory protection is required.

As you know I invested in one and I'm happy with it to date. You can get peelable plastic protectors for the main shield to prevent scratches.

Nice bit of kit,I was going to get one of these but ended up getting an old version of the Trend Airshield as I could adapt it and can now use rechargeable or normal AA batteries (so no waiting over night for a recharge). think these are better than the Trend Airshield Pro,heard a few bad things about them(it must be good if Sandys got one ,Ha) workshop is looking great (love the grinder from Mike) Cheers Jason

Hi Jason Thanks for the comments mate. It would of been so easy to spend the £200 on something else but I thought it was a good investment to help keep the old lungs going a bit longer 😬. Yes I'm loving the grinder - close up look coming soon mate. ATB Mike #StayCornish 😬

I'm still on the original filters with mine and don't use pre filters but the filters do clog real easy. I vacuum them sometimes twice a day to remove dust then the mask seems to work at good efficiency again.

I like this product, but it MUST be noted it is only offering protection to TH1P level - the lowest category of protection for 'turbo hoods' (powered respirators). This is a complex area, but it is important to note TH1P only carries an APF (Assigned Protection Factor) of 10; to put that in context, HSE (the Health & Safety Executive) cite TH2P which has an APF=20 as the minimum respiratory protection for working with hardwoods. As a point of information (not a recommendation) the Trend Airshield Pro carries certification to TH2P, so offers a higher level of respiratory protection. The 3M Versaflo offers configurations in TH2P and also TH3P, but carries a significantly higher price-tag. I owned this mask and liked it in terms of comfort, but have since chosen to replace it with a product offering better respiratory protection as I could not wear something I had since learnt HSE view as inadequate for the activity I bought it for - machining of hardwoods (woodturning). Hardwood dust is toxic. The dust of woods like beech, elm, oak, birch and ash are cited as carcinogenic and linked with respiratory disease and nasal cancer. In the manual, the manufacturer, JSP, clearly states the filters are "not suitable for toxic particles". It's for people to make their own mind up what's right for them, but do make sure you understand the spec, and are happy it's right for your application.

Thanks for a good video. A slight concern though; you say in the video (13m56s) that this product and the Trend (Airshield Pro, I think you mean) do "the same thing", but this is not correct. They are far from like-for-like in the respiratory protection they offer, and I think it's hugely important for buyers to understand that. Powered respirators fall under EN12941:1998, which determines 'inward leakage' - basically how effective a respirator is. They are then given a rating: TH1, TH2 or TH3. A suffix P is added for 'Particle' (i.e. dust). This product is TH1P, which means 10% inward leakage. The Trend Airshield Pro is TH2P which means 2% inward leakage. And, for context, a TH3P product means 0.2% inward leakage (99.8% effective). People sometimes ask why 3M's Versaflo is so expensive - aside from build quality, it's the very highest level of protection. This product filters dust as you say, but it's worth pointing out the User Manual states it offers protection from non-toxic dust and the filters " will not filter toxic substances". Dust from hardwoods is classed as toxic and a respiratory sensitiser (see HSE document WIS30 'Toxic woods'), and is also cited as a known human carcinogen (see COSHH Schedule 1 etc). The other thing to note is this product has an Assigned Protection Factor of 10 (that's what the APF10 bit means). If you look online at HSE's publication WIS14, you will see APF20 is cited as a requirement for "Sanding wood by hand, disc, bobbin, pad etc. Also for all work involving more toxic woods such as hardwoods and MDF". Hope you don't mind me clarifying the differences; the specs are hard to make sense of, and not widely understood. As I see it, when buying to protect your lungs, the effectiveness (or lack of) is hugely important to understand.

Hi, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. This video was not really a review but a channel update to my kit I use and buy and was in no means a technical rundown of the speciations. Anybody looking for a respirator/mask should do their homework as you have done. All I was saying really was this mask was better than what I had and it does what I wanted to do and give me better protection. ATB Mike #StayCornish 😬

Not a problem, Mike, thanks. It's a good clear video, and very useful run-down of the main features; I only wanted to clarify that point as many people watching these videos are trying to work out which respirator to buy, and I know countless woodturners who have bought this not realising how low the respiratory protection offered is by comparison. If you're spending £200+ and different specs exist at that same pricepoint, it's worth knowing what the differences are. Cheers.
