Oaki (my axolotl), bites me all the time because he thinks I'm food. I get scared I'm gonna flinch and hurt him, so I'm slowly starting to hand-feed him again. The little guy is such a rascal, he uproots all his plants so he can perch on them while they float around, then tries to eat them too! It's important to remember that axolotls are fragile, and should not be touched and handled frequently. Gary trusts his "mummy" because she doesn't try to grab him all the time!

@@tortoise2.04 Yes, they can, but it still hurts when they get injured. Also, their regeneration isn't completely perfect, and they can still get scars. They also live underwater and can't breathe air, so in order to handle them at all, it would have to be underwater. Also, handling would still stress them out because they would probably think the hand grabbing them is a predator. So, it's best not to handle them unless necessary.

Also you have to consider that if they outlived us on a regular basis it would be even worse, since they are very dependent on us for their survival. Imagine diying and knowing that you have noone who could take care for your pet as well as you did...it's a heartbreaking reality already for many people, and it would happen much more often if our pets easily outlived us.
