Don't impulse buy them as they need the right care, they can't be treated like goldfish Edit: Guys I know goldfish require care too!! I meant in the context of how parents buy fish as pets thinking its easy for kids to just dump it in a bowl of water. I worded it badly I just meant people might assume they will be easy to keep for kids like goldfish often are

@@cosmic_strawberry the most concerning thing is that they’re already on the brink of extinction, they’re extremely rare on the wild, and if people keep buying them without knowing how to properly take care of them, they will probably get them totally extinct. My parents say that when they were young, you could easily find axolotls swimming in Xochimilco, it’s kind of sad that they’re not longer there

4:47 so this isn't quite true. Axolotls do have a metamorphic "full adult" state that isn't aquatic. However they don't metamorphose naturally because their environment lacks the proper levels of iodine in order to do so! And it's extremely stressful for the axolotls to go through and it can greatly decrease their lifespan by multiple years, as they will often reject food and struggle to adapt. The only time this forced metamorphosis may happen is because the axolotl is exposed to extremely poor or dangerous water quality. They also look different too and lack the tail webbing and big gills, unlike the minecraft versions. So essentially- can axolotls go on land? Yes, once in a blue moon, but you should NEVER try to make your pet metamorphose because it's very stressful and potentially deadly. Also in Minecraft if they're brought on land they try to find the closest water source to go back in, which is cool lol This is redundant anyway lol,, I just kind of wanted to talk about how cool it is that axolotls are neotenic and unique among amphibians that way :)

Also just to clarify- being neotenic means an animal that becomes sexually mature/adult without completing metamorphosis. This is what axolotls are, because they are sexually mature in their nymph or aquatic stage and can reproduce. It's unique among amphibian species! Their species developed this way because of the lack of iodine in their natural habitat that their thyroid gland needs to help them metamorphose to their full adult stage. And evolving like this also helped cut down on the large amount of effort needed and energy spent to change from nymph to full adult and climb out of the water. Essentially, any pet axolotls you see are mature 'nymphs', meaning they are forever children in a biological sense!

I have 2 axolotls that do the mouth thing on a regular basis, they do close their mouths most of the time however, I've taken both to get checked out and both are completely ok, they usually do it before a yawn as well, so I'm assuming if they do it ALL the time then yes it is something wrong perhaps a stuck piece of food or infection, though infection would also have other symptoms so watch or other unusual visuals as well

@Arrowrifth What??? Axolotls don't need baths. Yeah, they'll need regular water changes but that's about it. You should never ever remove an axolotl from its tank unless absolutely necessary (taking it to the vet, for example). And even then, they still need to be in water so they can breathe properly.
