KZbin comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZbin comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

See, if it's mainstream science, they use unhealthily excessive scrutiny, arbitrary skepticism and even conspiracy theories to smear and devalue them. But when it comes to their own crazed theories, it doesn't require any critical thinking or evidence! It's just plain true! "It would have burnt out long ago..." On what basis does him arrive at such a conclusion? Has him done any calculations, research, or any real thinking at all? No! He bridges up the gaps with the superglue known as God and faith and willful ignorance. It's...disgusting.

Fascinating that your caller had it exactly the wrong way round - what he thinks happens is how we discovered fusion - we thought the sun was "burning", then we measured its mass and realised it would have burned out a very long time ago if that were true, hence "something else" had to be going on, so we looked for what that could be - and found it, developing a whole new branch of knowledge along the way.

​@@paulgascoigne5343The fusion reaction in the sun is relatively slow. It's basically a mass of gas compressed by gravity so that the hydrogen atoms occassionally fuse. Bigger stars burn faster, but our Sun is not particularly huge. But you can do the math yourself.

Nuclear fusion. It's not a big ol' ball of fire in a vaccuum, it's nuclear fusion, converting hydrogen into helium, and generating massive amounts of heat and radiation as a byproduct (oversimplified). The mechanics of which are pretty well understood by those who choose to look into it. It makes perfect sense once you understand those mechanics.
