I've come to the conclusion it's a chicken and egg question. Do illogical minds naturally embrace religion, or does religion make them illogical? It's apparently far more common for people to realize that the Bible is a mess of poetry and impossible assertions and leave religion than for a logical critical thinker to gravitate toward religion.

I am embarrassed and ashamed to admit that I used to think just like Antonio. From the time I was a child, I was told what to believe and not to question it. Up until then, I had not read the Bible for myself, but only cherry-picked verses taught by my church. I had assumed everything in the Bible was just true. At Thanksgiving dinner with my family in 2003, I got into an argument about theism and homosexuality with my gay nephew, who was never a believer. I very arrogantly thought I had the moral high ground over him and everyone else who was not a believer. He very calmly encouraged me to read the entire Bible for myself, so I did just that believing it would reaffirm my position. It took me 18 months, but when I was finished, I could not function for 4 months after. I was so filled with rage, so angry, and so hurt that I had been LIED to about the goodness and love of this God. What I read in the Bible had nothing to do with love. It was about a deity that advocated for sexism, racism, misogyny, war, human sacrifice, slavery, and the senseless unaliving of sentient babies and children. No matter how hard I tried, I could NOT do the mental gymnastics required to defend such an evil deity. Right there began my deconstruction. I refuse to believe any divine being inspired the disgusting mess that is the Bible. If anyone should be judged and beg for forgiveness, it is Jehovah/Yahweh/Allah, not people. If anyone should suffer eternal damnation, it is this deity. What it did to Bathsheba's baby son is pure evil. Don't even get me started on the rest. I profusely apologized to my nephew, and we are now closer than ever.

oh, it's much worse... the bible doesn't mention Adam's rib growing back afaik, so it's irrelevant in that regard. Even if it did, god was doing magic so it wouldn't suggest heritability... A rib regrowing in the original animal does not in any way suggest the broken off part can regrow an entire animal, let alone of a different sex, so it's irrelevant in that regard as well. There's no connection at all to make it evidence. There's not even just "it's consistent" because ribs not regrowing is exactly as consistent with the bible. It's only "it's both about ribs"

Christians want to perpetuate the myth that women were created to be subservient to men. It doesn't fit the Christian narrative to mention that Lilith was Adams equal in every way so they don't.

@@crazyprayingmantis5596 hmm I don't actually remember what she was made of 🤔 What I remember of this old random Jewish folklore is that after Lilith there was another woman made for Adam, but she was made in front of him. So he saw her being put together from the inside-out - bones knitting together, ligaments, sinew, organs, muscles and tendons and fat and teeth and skin.. when she was done he couldn't stand to look at her, cos he was disgusted by the thought of what he saw, so she had to be, umm.. 'undone' 😅 Essentially god destroyed her cos Adam was grossed out. Then came the Eve story and putting Adam to sleep (after the 2nd attempt we know he cannot be allowed to see it happen) and taking the bone and so on. Some people think this is why Adam says "At last" when god brings eve to him - third times the charm I guess 🤷‍♂️

Then, theists will equate atheist's science book as holy scripture and point at how it was changed throughout due to wrongful information. Theists' book, however, is unerring to them and it successfully prophesied many incidents showing that no human is capable of such. By doing that, their faith is backed by higher power and atheists having false faith in science is ridiculous. That is why they think their faith is far substantiated than atheists

Regarding the preamble: “I was only following orders” is not a defense. Even in the military, you have a duty and obligation to disobey unlawful orders. Regarding ribs and Adam and Eve: Yes, ribs can regenerate. So what? “Do I think it’s a coincidence” that the story of the creation of Eve from the rib (traditionally) of Adam uses a bone that can regenerate in mammals? Yes. After all, the rib regenerates in *ADAM.* It’s not like you can take a rib out of someone and regrow a person from the rib. The reasons that ribs can regenerate in humans is due to the presence of certain cells in the periosteum and the perichondrium. The periosteum surrounds every bone and contains osteoblasts, which are the cells that can grow bone. It’s why if you break a bone, you can set it and the bones will “knit” back together to form a single bone. The perichondrium contains stem cells that drive the regeneration of the rib. That is, osteoblasts form bone, but you have a lot of different shapes of bone. The stem cells help to drive that formation of bone specifically into a rib bone as opposed to just generalized growth of bone. Due to the rich blood supply surrounding the ribs along with these cells in this environment, they are particularly well-suited for regeneration as opposed to other bones. Other bones don’t have these advantages, though there are some known instances where the bones of the fingertips have regenerated. All that said, part of the reason I say it’s coincidence is that the word used to describe the creation of Eve is more directly translated as “side.” While there are many good linguistic reasons to translate it as “rib,” I bring this up because there is something else in the human body that is much better at regeneration and is also in the “side”: The liver. You can remove up to 90% of the liver and it will regenerate itself. So why is the caller fixated on the rib when the liver is a much more likely candidate? But notice, this is falling for the assumption: That there is some scientific basis for the idea of being able to create an entirely new human from a body part of another. In neither case does a regenerating rib or liver result in a new human. Again, the rib regrows in the *HOST* body and only regrows a rib. You can transplant the bone somewhere else (rib bone is routinely used in plastic surgeries) and it will grow as bone. The rib doesn’t create a new person. You can transplant a lobe of a liver into a new person and it will grow to a full-sized liver and the liver that remains in the host will also regenerate itself, but in neither case you get a person. You just get liver. So yes, ribs (and liver) can regenerate. What does that have to do with anything? Regarding dust: “Dust” isn’t a thing in and of itself. “Dust” is just a fine powdery substance and what it consists of depends entirely on what has been powdered. Grind the starch of wheat into a powder and the resulting “dust” is made up of starch. Grind talc into a powder and the resulting “dust” is made up of hydrated magnesium silicate. Grind the grains of sand on a beach into a powder and the resulting “dust” is made up of silicon dioxide…unless you’re at a black sand beach where it will be iron oxide and iron titanium oxide…unless it’s a lava black sand beach where the “dust” will include even more stuff like alumina, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, etc. But in the end, since humans are made from atoms that are present upon the earth, how is it surprising to see that the atoms that make up a human would be present in the minerals that are found in the crust of the earth? After all, humans get their atoms from the food they eat and when you trace it back, you find that those atoms eventually come from plants taking those atoms out of the soil. A plant takes minerals from the earth and uses them to build its body. Animals eat the plants and use the atoms in the plants to build their bodies. So of course the atomic structure of humans is going to reflect the composition of the “dust of the earth.” What would be astounding is if it didn’t. Regarding the flood: It is topologically impossible to flood the earth. About 97% of the total water on earth is in the oceans. Another couple percent can be found in the lakes, rivers, and ice. Only about 0.001% of the water on the earth is in the atmosphere as vapor. If all the water in the atmosphere were to condense, it would only cover the earth with about an inch of water…which would immediately run into the ocean (assuming none of it were to be absorbed by the ground), leaving pretty much all the dry land we see today. In order to flood the earth, you need to put water on top of the water that already exists. The radius of the earth is approximately 4000 miles to sea level. The height of Mt. Everest is another 5.5 miles above that. Thus, to flood the earth, you would need a shell of water with an inner radius of 4000 miles and an outer radius of 4005 miles. That comes out to about 1 billion cubic miles. But, there’s only about 330 million cubic miles of water on the earth. It would take three times as much water as all the water on the earth to completely flood it. There simply isn’t enough water. It is topologically impossible to flood the planet. Regarding “you have to believe in something”: No, you don’t. It really is that simple. There is no need to believe in anything. “I don’t know” is a rational response.

Is a story of a donkey talking a fake story? Doesn't it make sense that a god will give a donkey the power to speak? In the story: 1. The god sends an angel of death to kill the donkey and its owner. 2. Only the donkey can see the angel of God waiting in the middle of the road to kill them (because the angel couldn't just go directly to the owner for some reason). 3. The donkey stops and the owner gets mad since he can't see the angel that the donkey sees. 4. The owner gets mad and beats the donkey. 5. God thinks that's unfair so gives the donkey the power to speak so that the donkey can complain. THIS is what's in the Bible. And yet, Christians don't think the Bible is a book of fairy tales. This is despite us having a fairy tale about a talking donkey who's a friend of an ogre.

Im starting to think people like this physically don’t have the ability to comprehend words with more than 3 syllables. These people have less than grade school levels of scientific/actual literacy when it comes to defending their core beliefs. When they spit out their pre packaged word salad of vaguely scientific sounding terminology that they themselves don’t know the meaning of, Forest and Mike assume more of these callers intelligence than is warranted. You have to start from step ZERO. Talking to these people like they know what “colloquial” means when they misuse the term ‘theory’ guarantees that your point goes over their head without internalizing any concepts you tried to convey. Engaging with theist arguments for a large chunk of my life, and how little they’ve changed, taught me just how predictable human behavior is; if you grow up in a cult that bludgeons away at your sense of critical thinking from the day you’re able to understand spoken language, then it’s not at all surprising that these same people grow up to be easily afraid, conspiratorial, and fundamentally uncurious people that repeat obviously untrue statements without a second thought. Sometimes it’s not that complicated, sometimes people are just lost.

Forrest is the best man. He can cite exactly how and why things in the universe work and theists can’t respond to real information.

The moment he started shouting "I understand" was a very clear indication that he did not, in fact, understand. He just realized that he wasn't going to 'win' the argument because his evidence was bad.

One would expect the human body would be made up of the same stuff as the available material to make it. It would be more miraculous if we were made up of really rare elements.

As a veteran, this guys sucks. We fight for our brothers in arms. We follow orders because that's what makes a good fighting force. But in the end, we fight for the guy next to us

There also isn't enough water volume on the planet to submerge all of the land mass.

@@garys1266 But you can notice that the water miracles in the bible keep decreasing in size and significance. First god parts the waters of the universe. Then he drowns a planet. Next he parts a small sea and by the end, in the NT, we are talking about a man walking on a smallish lake and turning a few gallons of water to wine. It's the incredibly shrining Mr. God of Jewish mythology on full exhibit. By the end they didn't even have the energy to make up the big lies, they could only serve up small ones.

There was no Adam & Eve or a first human. Asking the question "Who was the first human?" is as absurd as asking "How old were you when you were growing up?", or "Who was the first person to fully speak French?".
