As a biologist, I find this fascinating. This chimp is checking her eye lashes for lice, her nostrils for worms (check out "turning sickness" in apes). He's checking her skin (especially the folds) for staph infections. Smelled her mouth for gingivitis (indicator of tooth decay). Checked the sclera of her eyes (jaundice is a sign of malnutrition). Checked her nails for fungi. To me, this seems very intentional and borders on medical.

Well its not surprising, given how our early ancestors began to use tools. Early bipedal primates (when the ancestors of other primates and humans separated and there started to be tall chimp-like creatures that had similar body proportions to that of modern humans) have been found to have had broken rocks for sharp edges, as a means of weapon and to break animal bones for nutrient dense bone marrow. Chimps are very proficient in tool usage and even planning and strategising. When hunting monkeys, chimps tend to initiate different groups to lead the prey into an area where it can only go in one direction, where a separate chimp is there to catch it. They use plant stems or sticks to fish for ants and termites as well. Its the closest thing we have tobeing able to go back in time and watch early hominids develop tool usage. Who knows, maybe at some point chimps will discover how to utilise fire and enter a new age of advancement.@@tobifalola8483

And to your first point, I do agree that we could call other mammals distant relatives but they aren't as close. To put it in perspective, a small rat-like creature which lived about 145 million years ago is the earliest Eutherian mammal discovered so far. It is thought to be the distant relative of all placental mammals, ranging from blue whales, shrews to humans. So while we are related to that rat-like creature, and we could say that our distant relatives scurried around like rats, the timescale of 145 million years is quite vast. So we're much more closely related to chimps because only 6 to 7 million years ago is when we split from the common ancestor on that branch of the evolutionary tree.

I do believe he was exercising a lot more restrain than a human would working on her face.

But naturally an ape weighing 50-90 kg and that much stronger pound to pound is quite something if it gets upset. Animals don't restrain their strength like we can do if things escalate. It's fascinating watching him analyze another species other than himself. I wonder what he's thinking when he sees certain differences. I imagine he's like 'I can't tell if that's supposed to be there or not but I'll check anyway.' They do it for fun and bonding in the wild. They look for parasites or fungus or loose skin or whatever that they can pick off and try to clean. Honestly it's a shame we stopped doing this stuff ourselves and only go to a paid spa rarely.

It's a natural behavior in primates, grooming is not only a form of hygiene but also a way for them to bond with others. Chimps for example will groom another to either help calm them, as a sign of forgiveness or to try and make friends with them. Friends in a chimp group is important as it means you often will have back up if another chimp in your group gets out of hand with you, even if said other chimp is the alpha. Saw on a episode of monkey life where the alpha of a group they were introducing two new Chimps into kept getting brutal with one of the two new Chimps. So they had him spend time with just the others in the group without the alpha around and let him form bonds with the others by grooming and such. Sure enough when they brought the alpha back in and he got out of hand again the rest of the troop now excepting the new guy protected him and the alpha realized that he was outnumbered went off to cool off and think and eventually accepted the new chimp.

I can definitely see why grooming sessions are a bonding experience. I'm someone with a long family history of skin conditions and I'm a redhead, so I've been seeing a dermatologist for many years. When I go in for check-ups there, she'll go through my hair because they have found precancerous moles on my head before. It's like one of the most relaxing things ever. My favorite part by far. This is basically the same thing lmfao, checking up on someone's physical health. Very fascinating stuff.

With what I know about apes, this was just fascinating to watch for a couple reasons. For starters, grooming in apes like chimpanzees is how troops keep strong bonds with one another - they check each other for stuff like parasites and even medical issues, and it is a calming experience for both parties involved. To see this chimp do that with a zookeeper, you just know that they're bond is really something to behold. Second, this was just calming to watch... like ASMR. The chimp is so meticulous and careful, it's calming just to watch it do this.

As a massage therapist and nurse assistant, I find this amazing. I just watched a video of a small monkey grooming its human family members, and the differences in how it and this chimp performed grooming are amazing. The small monkey seemed to be mostly about examining mostly the scalp but also facial and forearm hair for bugs. The actions of the chimp in this video are closer to a medical examination than a grooming. The chimp is trying to learn and perhaps even bond, and is very thorough in its examination. I thought it was funny when it looked down the lady's shirt like, "Hm...bit different than ours. Next!"

There's just something relaxing about the idea of being groomed and looked at, like how back scratches feel good. Also, I wouldn't trust chimps OR pitbulls near a child or anyone I love. Both are incredibly unstable, but pitbulls essentially have psychopathy and bloodthirst. Pitbulls are a whole other animal. Have you seen the video from years ago of a pitbull lunging and attacking a large carriage horse? You can find it easily on KZbin with those search terms. The video is a great example of why these dogs are so dangerous. It’s literally getting kicked by a probably 1800-2000lb animal. An animal that a single wolf alone cannot bring down. This act is not based in any survival. It’s a fat dog, not hungry. Attacking alone. This is not natural at all. The dog does not have the sense to determine when the fight is futile. All sense has been bred out and replaced with a reckless abandonment level prey drive. That is a very dangerous mental state for any animal to be in. If a 2,000 lb horse can’t get it off, what makes a 180lb man think he can stop it? The human ego will keep us in the dark for eternity, especially if think you'd keep pits around children under any circumstance. Even if you only mean that as an example.

@@archangelrapheal5231 yeah it's quite interesting, the way I understand it is that before language and symbols, say if we came across a poisonous spider, we would have to remember its specific patterns to know to avoid it in the future, and we would have not really had anyway to communicate that information to others, or at least not more than our immediate family. It's crazy how millions of years of evolution took us all the way to the point where we have two species so incredibly close together in similarities. This was absolutely amazing to watch! I can only imagine what was going through this little guy's head. The thing is too, a lot of people in the comments saying how "human" the chimp seems to be, and although I get where you're coming from, the thing is, it's not that the chimp is behaving human...it's that we, despite everything, are but apes ourselves.

@@prickly_procyonids according to what i have seen with nuemrous amount of street dogs i have been with (india specially the part where i live have lots of street dogs), eye contact could mean two things 1) affection, 2) aggression depending upon personality of each dog you meet and how your relationship is with the dogs, some of them are kind of extrovert and playful they wouldn't mind eye contact mostly pups and sometimes female dogs but some (mostly adult male) are kind of reserved with there emotion, they would refrain from eye contact and would move away there face if constatly try to make an eye contact or even run away as they accept us as dominant and don't want a beef this is me trying to make eyecontact with all the friendly dogs
